tail panel question
« on: April 21, 2009, 09:32:36 PM »
ok found some bad stuff on the y82. the tail panel is fine but the inner side of it or inner skin of you will, that goes up from the bottom to the trunk floor has holes. i over looked it. does that come with the actual tail panel or can that be bought separately?

It doesn't come with the tail panel (nor does the trunk lip (top of tail panel) that the weatherstripping sits in) and it isn't repro'd so you'll have to repair yours or get a donor...it is spot welded to the backside of the tail panel and the rear of the gas tank brackets are welded to it...also it is sandwiched between the outer tail panel and the rear of the frame rails.
So it's a lot of work getting it out/in ;)

my outer skin was good. and the inner had some dime size holes in it with rust pits after I wire wheeled it. none of my parts cars had a good one so I sprayed DP40 on it and put fiber glass mat on it and sanded it smooth the sprayed the DP40 over that. should be good for a long time. I hope. I'll get a pic of the inner panel and post it as well.

I know you need it, but you'd cut up an otherwise solid car for that?

I'd have to agree with Larry...cutting up a solid car just for the inner tail panel wouldn't make sense...especially if you consider how much work goes into removing/separating (ton of spot welds to drill out) that piece (and then doing the same to your car)...you might be time ahead by removing/repairing the one you have.

This is a complete inner tail panel by itself:
(this one was rough but I blasted it and patched it with new metal before using it)

under the trunk, spot welded to the outer tail panel.  between the tail panel and the gas tank. most think its one piece, but there's an inner and outer panel. sand and salt get up in there and rot it away. and there is no repop as of yet for them. for 79-81

i was told the inner is the same for my 77 and i was told they do not repop them at all for the inner. if the only way to get it is by cutting up another car, count me in because a y82 deserves to have it.
