1972 Formula 455 HO distributor
« on: August 06, 2012, 09:41:22 PM »
I'm trying to get a new cap, coil, rotor button, and module for my transistorize unit distributor and can't find them at the local auto parts houses. Tried O'Rileys, AutoZone, Advance and got the same parts which included all wrong parts.  The parts they tried to give me was for a points and condenser distributor.  Mine is more like and HEI.  I got the rotor button for a 1975 HEI but it does not fit.  Any idea where I can get these parts from?  Does any one have a LS-5 engine that can send me the part numbers for these parts?
Thanks for any help!!

LS5?  Can you post pics so we know what Dizzy you are referring to?  Might try Rock Auto?

I went out and checked the numbers on the distributor and they are 1103314 7H1 l.  The picture of the unitized distributor I can find do not look like the one I have in the car.  The one I have looks like a HEI but I bought a new rotor button for a 1975 HEI and it does not fit.  The numbers on the GM module are 990  7H63AZ.  I'm not sure if down the road the PO didn't switch out the original distributor as parts were probably hard to find.

From what I can find on the Internet it looks as though the distributor that is in the car is one for a Pontiac 301 Y code engine years 78-79.  Would this distributor be able to work correctly in the 455 motor?  I know that the lady I bought the car from said that she had a mechanic working on the carb, but that she decided to stop work due to his price increasing the further he got into it.  When I got the car the carb and air cleaner was in the trunk along with a new air filter, plug wires, cap, rotor button, points and condenser.  I'm not sure who bought the parts or when (they look old maybe late 80s early 90s) but the cap, rotor button, points and condenser cannot be used with the distributor that is in the car.  I'm not sure if this mechanic was going to try and convert it over to a pre HEI system or just asked for parts for the year and got given to him what was tried to be given to me.

Question is what should I do.  Take the rotor button I bought (1975 HEI 455 button) back and ask for a 78-79 301 rotor button, or change the distributor out to an aftermarket one?  Sorry for the long post.

I would try and find one specifically for a 455 I am not saying that one wont work just sounds like you have a hodge podge or too many uncertainties?

I found out that I do have a 78-79 distributor which goes in a 301 Y code engine. I got the right rotor button, and got the car to fire up!! Down side to it is that the speedometer or the speedometer cable sounds as if it is about to exit the dash at a high rate of speed. I plan to open up another thread to discuss. Thanks for all the help!!!
