Post by: Bman on September 03, 2015, 09:59:02 PM
Okay, here is my project. 78 with t-tops nothing special. original 400 engine, car needs total restore.

floor pans were shot

pulled engine and verified numbers matching

replaced floor pans what a pain in the a$$

sprayed Lizard Skin sound deadener to seal up and finally finish the floor project. pretty happy with the results, it actually dries black color.

Wow, great job  so far. Floor pans, got to give you credit there, rather pull a motor any day then do floor pan repair.

Been pretty busy since i bought the car in april. Very pleased with the progress so far. 400 engine is back from machine shop and slowly being assembled. Also had tranny rebuilt. Using SPI Epoxy Primer for frame and suspension parts. Just painted sub frame today. SPI Epoxy Primer is top notch stuff!!
Heres the radiator support

Lol tell me about it, I've been collecting parts for my '76 for 3 years now, and my '81 was gonna be my daily driver, but ended up going way further than I wanted to.  That one has been a year in October lol.  Not even close to being ready.

I live in northern Indiana. Sold my motorcycle and 4 wheeler to fund this project, I haven't ran out of money yet lol. Trying to do most everything myself. I will probably have a professional do the bodywork/paint when it gets to that point. Here's a few more pics!

A-Arms ready to install

Weekend work. Got the subframe reinstalled. I went with the Energy suspension poly bushings.
(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsfkvhpzdi.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsfkvhpzdi.jpg.html)

Frame bolted right up, anybody know if i need to square up the frame? I forgot to mark the location when I took the frame off.

Managed to get the springs in, what a pain that was!

Bman, Yes you do need to line up your frame. There are holes in the frame right next to where the bushing mounts to your firewall. It is about a 5/8 inch diameter (I think, but I can't be sure). You need to run a pin up through the frame hole in to the hole on your firewall to line it up. For pins I used hitch pins, like what you use in your receiver on a pickup hitch. I'm sure someone on here has a picture they could post of how they did it. Better loosen that up and run those pins in there and make sure you are lined up.

Thanks 4speed76, I'm pretty happy with the progress so far. Thank you Elz, that sounds pretty easy to do. I figured there was a way to line it up just wasn't sure how.

X2 on the undercarriage, I just finished my '81 without the use of the hoist.  Don't think I'll ever do it that way again.  Awesome progress by the way, give me motivation to get back on mine

Thanks, I did the underside of the front half of the car laying under it. Both ways weren't very fun, but the hoist did help.

Just found this thread tonight and really enjoyed seeing your progress. Congrats on all the work you've gotten done. I too have an 02 T/A and a 78 Martinique Blue T/A. This inspires me to get working on mine again, along with my 14 yr. old son.
Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the kind words! I've been busy working on the car though it feels like I'm not getting much done. Couple tail panel pics.

I'm equally impressed.  I've been restoring my 1978 and find myself bouncing all over the place from seat tracks, to rebuilding the door latches to pulling the radiator core to sanding the trunk lid to replacing trunk torsion rods to ....

I've been sand blasting all the front hardware as of this month and grinding down the sharp edges from the factory.  Have about 2-3 more hours then I'll be ready for the oven and powder coat.

I'm about to pull the engine next so I can blast the frame and powder coat it as well.

I'm looking for a lower left a-arm; the previous owner seemingly ran it on a curb or something.  Ground down the arm where the shock is barely bolted on.  Go figure!

Keep the pics coming and your experiences shared;  We all learn from one another.  Take a look at my Daves 1978 restoration if your going to do the seat tracks.  I provide a helpful post on how to repair them with pictures.  Doesn't come close to your body work though!

Thanks BMAN.  Perhaps I'll catch up to you this winter, but know I'll likely not have your experience in metal work; that's a skill you surpass me on.

TATTA, I'll check locally on the A-arm.  Shipping alone will kill me from your location.  I need it, just need to find a reasonable location / source.

Thanks but my metal skills are limited. I'm trying to locate a body shop now so a professional can hang the quarter panels. I did however get a few things accomplished this weekend.

Decided to install engine and tranny. Custom shrink wrapped the engine to keep dust out at the body shop.

I really like how you did the lizard skin on the interior size and also the textured undercoating under the car.  Seems like your panels will be sealed and sound deadened very well.

If still looking at leaf springs, check out the Hyperco composite leafs.  The spring being much lighter seems like it would have the ability to react much faster versus a steel leaf.  Ridetech is now offering them with their new street grip kits and I'm sure other companies like PTFB could supply them as well.

Here's another business offering the composite leaf as well (they claim 50lbs reduction on leaf itself)...

Thanks guys! I am hoping the Lizard Skin and undercoating do keep the noise down. I did purchase some springs for the rear and I will update on the ride height issue. Thanks for the info jonathonar89, I ended up just buying 4 leaf Eaton springs.
Haven't made too much progress lately. The body shop search has proven tiring. Everything from outrageous quotes, to I don't have time, to I don't want to tackle a big project, to no response at all. So I still have some leads on "good" body guys, crossing my fingers one comes along soon.

Here's the most recent trip to body shop for quote

I believe I have found a good body guy, scheduled to go to body shop at the end of the month.

I'm curious to see what the body guy charges you. I have to replace the right quarter and rocker on my car. My tail panel is rusted but it is not nearly as bad as yours was. The floor and trunk I am hoping to do myself eventually. Your car looks like it is turning out really nice.

Ok, finally was able to download a few pics. My brother has been busy cleaning up and sorting thru the wiring.

Hung the doors per body guys request. He wants doors on for body line reference.

And I picked up my seats from the guy that reupholstered them. Pretty pleased with how they came out.

Tomorrow planning on painting some the plastic parts for the seats. Still waiting to hear from body guy on date to drop off the car for quarters.

That's it for now. Have lots of sanding to do but pretty confident the dash will come out nice. Should have a pic or two from the body guy this week.....

Title: Dash Pad
Post by: Transatrom on February 26, 2016, 06:02:08 AM
I'm impressed with the results of the dash.  I would be interested is seeing photos of the chemicals you used; spray foam, dash filler, texture spray, and final color (SEM?).  Did it come out looking as good as the pictures show?

Is there a telling of a dash repair when handled (e.g., harder/softer in spots of repair)?

Thanks Transatrom! Here is a pic with the SEM colorcoat finish. I am really happy with the way the dash turned out. You can see a few small imperfections, but overall it looks great. As far as the feel, the padded dash filler is flexable when it dries, so it feels just like the rest of the dash.

Appreciate the chemical photos used on the dash.  I'm at the point where I was going to send mine off to "Just Dashes", but think I'll experiment with my console first to see if I can achieve professional results.

The console I have is cracked around the window switch.  I found the mounting screws up forward were missing causing it to flex too much and I think that is what caused the failure.

Just Dashes is in the price range of $500-$800 I believe for each; the dash and the console.  This is a more attractive solution if it works out.

Yeah I was skeptical at first but i figured what do I have to lose. I haven't been able to find info on how the repair holds up, so hopefully it will last a while. Definitely looks better than it did.

Been tinkering putting things on like plug wires, charcoal canister, and battery cables. Seems like things are moving slowly. Spending lots of time trying to figure out where things go. Waiting to get a nice weekend so i can sandblast various things.
I'll get some pictures of the progress this weekend.

I did decide to go ahead and order my Year One 17x9 snowflakes.

Well the weather has not been cooperating, but i have made a little progress.
Took the car to have exhaust put on it, just had them make a y-pipe to single back to the muffler. Don't have a underneath pic yet but here it is on the trailer.

(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps7cxlspi9.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps7cxlspi9.jpg.html)

Did a little sandblasting on the hood, fenders, and air cleaner. Just did the underside bracing on the fenders and hood, then I Epoxy primered everything.

So, I'm told painter will be ready for the car soon. Crossing fingers!

I am really impressed. i'm doing the same restoration and way behind you so far.  I'm interested in the brake booster combination; where did you source it from.  Also, I just replaced both the washer fluid and radiator jugs.  I must tell you the only thing dragging down the appearance is those old reservoirs.   I almost want to buy you both of them to make the engine compartment pop!

You are doing a bang up job!

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments. Transatrom, I picked up the brake booster on Ebay it's made by Inline tube. Here's one like it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/70-81-F-body-Power-Disc-Drum-Brake-Booster-Master-Cylinder-Valve-Bracket-Kit-/182054770830?hash=item2a634f588e

As far as the overflow jugs, never even thought about replacing them. LOL
Where did you get yours?

Managed to get the engine smoothed out today, turns out the new cap and coil on the distributor was missing the ground terminal for some reason. Ungrounded coil equals no power at higher rpms and backfiring thru the exhaust.
Have finally located some a/c brackets locally, so a/c is going on next then fenders and nose.
Hopefully by then paint guy will be ready for it.

I have been following your rebuild and continue to be amazed at the results.  Looking at your a/c pics, it looks like you have all new hoses, canister and compressor?  I appreciate the info on the brake booster and am heading out to Carlisle Pa for the GM Nationals this weekend, hoping to see in-line there and pick up my booster assembly.

Back to my a/c hoses, they are ok but I really want the new look like yours.  Any information you can pass along would be helpful.

Thank you! Actually the hoses and compressor I bought off Craigslist since my car had nothing when I bought it. So everything is used except for the new condenser coil, and I'm hoping it works for me. I will take it to a local shop to have all seals replaced and new oil and refrigerant installed. All I did was clean, wire brush, and paint the parts you see.

Here's what I started with.
(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsrzjziwj8.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsrzjziwj8.jpg.html)

I used a cast aluminum spray paint for the aluminum parts, same stuff I used on the alternator. I can get a pic of that if you want. It doesn't have the exact finish as OEM, but it didn't come out too bad.

You have convinced me to restore mine the same way.  I was going to throw mine away and buy new but the price has me reconsidering.  I'll wire wheel them this weekend and see if I can get the same results!

I used a Scotch Brite pad on the aluminum parts, just scuffed them up and painted. Used a wire brush on the steel hose fittings.
Here's the aluminum paint I used. I think I ordered it from Summit.

Okay, so here's the latest. Body guy has car, says it will be 2 months as he has a full time job. Pretty much at this point I told him not to rush. I really wanted to be wrapping this project up by the end of summer, but it's not gonna happen. New plan is to take my time and get her assembled this winter. Wanting to possibly do the Hot Rod Power Tour next year. We will see!

Hood stripped down revealing several dings

Making a little progress. Things are taking forever to reassemble. Also with the new quarter panels things are not fitting right.

Trunk seal
(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/image_zpsganrwy3p.jpeg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/image_zpsganrwy3p.jpeg.html)

Tail lights which did not want to fit, but i made them fit.
(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/image_zpsrl32ckwl.jpeg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/image_zpsrl32ckwl.jpeg.html)

Trunk deck and spoilers. Still need some tweaking when new trunk seal relaxes a bit.

Gonna tackle doors next, internals and windows. Everything I've read says the windows need to be installed to attach door seals.

I'm still watching your progress!  I was reading the manual and if I recall correctly the doors are the first to be hung.  Then the fenders and hood.  Just a suggestion, because the door needs to align with the rear quarter first the front to the door then the fenders to the hood.  Right?  I'm going out on a limb regarding your photos.  They are excellent but there are two things that are noticeable.  The windshield and overflow tanks.  I bought new ones and they make a ton of difference when looking at everything you have done.  If you can swing it, they would really brighten up the compartment!

Don't forget to put sealant under the access panel for the trunk torsion bars.  Those little screws go straight into the trunk; a place for water intrusion and the cause for many rusted trunk pans!  An ounce of prevention is worth a ton in wasted effort should water get into the trunk and destroy your tremendous work!
Title: Re: 78 martinique blue
Post by: Bman on November 21, 2016, 10:05:17 PM
Thanks for the tips! Didn't even think about putting sealant on the screws for the spring panel. I will be sure to do that. I will probably replace the bottles at some point, but first I have money to spend else where. As far as the body panels, I'm pretty clueless on how to line them up. Turns out my "body guy" doesn't want to hang the panels or line them up. Lesson learned there, I assumed he was going to paint and reassemble.

Hey guys, Im still working on her. Body guy has really put a hurt on my time line and wallet. I had to go get my nose that is still not painted. Currently trying to find someone to finish what needs to be done. I will say to get things in writing BEFORE any work begins no matter how well you think you know someone. That's all i'm gonna say about that, lesson learned.
On to the progress pictures

Started with the doors. Installed windows, handles, and window felt. Caution---Don't use the screws that come with the window felt they are too long. I now have a nice dimple in my passenger door that will need fixed. Another lesson learned.

Windows installed, new windshield and original rear glass

Had a heck of a time with the gages. Replaced the printed circuit board, that fixed the dash lights but then the tachometer didn't work, so I had to replace it. Also grounding issues etc. I believe everything works now.

(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/IMG_4127_zpsrayqc0c6.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/IMG_4127_zpsrayqc0c6.jpg.html)

Here's how it looks out of the garage. Thinking I will need to lower it a bit.

Well I found a new paint guy. Had to stop on interior progress and remove all spoilers, side light markers, door handles, locks, and mirrors. Basically everything but window trim.

(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/IMG_4191_zpsxawxxocp.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/IMG_4191_zpsxawxxocp.jpg.html)

This is what she looked like when I took her to the new guy

(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/IMG_4241_zpsxykaotnm.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/IMG_4241_zpsxykaotnm.jpg.html)

The plan was to line up all the body panels, paint nose, wet sand the rest.

(http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t547/waylon005/IMG_4320_zpslo5ycycs.jpg) (http://s1313.photobucket.com/user/waylon005/media/IMG_4320_zpslo5ycycs.jpg.html)

In the process of lining up body panels and wet sanding it was determined it would be best to just repaint the whole car. There were a bunch of imperfections , also the spot on the door where I put a dimple from using too long of a screw had to be fixed.

Thank You for following this post Dark T/A. I appreciate the kind words!
Spent many hours this weekend trying to wrap up this project so it will be ready for summer.
Got pretty involved in putting parts on and didn't take many pictures, here's what I do have.

Carpet finally went in along with seats

Counsel, front seats, and sill plates (Not sure what they're called, aluminum pieces that hold the carpet)

Interior almost complete except I still need to tackle the window alignment and door panels.

Also Installed the wheel spoilers, trunk spoilers, headlight bezels, Pontiac nose emblem, and Year One wheels.
This is the part where I didn't get any in process pictures. Here's a few from earlier today.

Thank you saskta! It's been really a challenging project and I so look forward to enjoying this car. I can tell you a couple things I would do differently. The main thing would be do your research and find a reputable body shop. Start looking for someone way before you are going to need them. Good body guys are usually booked out. Also I am still trying to sort out the electrical components. If I did it again I would scrap all original wiring and replace with new. Everything else went pretty smooth for me, with the help of my Dad and brother. Good luck on your resto! I will post some pics soon, decals going on in 2 weeks!!

It's coming out nice! Look forward to seeing pics with decals. You're not the only one cursing Pbucket recently. Seems like they put so many ads on it bogs the computer till it stalls. I've been paying for additional storage for years, now I'm gonna have to pay to stop the ads so I can use the service I'm already paying for? Nice way to treat customers.
Title: Re: 78 martinique blue
Post by: Bman on June 18, 2017, 07:50:47 PM
Well that's good to know, I am experiencing the same issues.
Soooo, Here's the latest and greatest. I have had the decals installed and they also painted the rubber molding that goes on the wheel spoilers. Have had a few problems with the car since it has been completed. First it would stall out of the blue while driving down the road. Also the brake light would come and go usually whenever it was most inconvenient for me. I ended up replacing the ignition module in the distributor which was already replaced once. Seems to have fixed that issue. The brake lights I believe was just a ground, after I cleaned the grounds in the trunk the lights seem to be ok now.
Thursday I arrived back home after taking the car on the Hot Rod Power Tour. We didn't do the whole tour, but I did put 2,000 miles on her. Had one big problem on the trip, the A/C went out. It was electrical(go figure)a wire end on a connector had broken. Unfortunately I didn't figure it out until today. I toughed it out and was just overjoyed to be able to drive my car. Ok, heres a few pics!!

Thanks to everyone on here for the compliments and support over the last couple years. This resto took me just over 2 years to complete. I will post more pics as the summer progresses, planning on doing car shows and cruises.

Yes, Photobucket has stopped free 3rd party hosting.  They want $399 annual membership for accounts that allow posting on external website like this.  Many forum members, including myself, have their threads currently looking like this.

Wow! Sorry guys. I have no idea how to upload pictures now. I'm definitely not paying photobucket $400 a year. Ridiculous

Bman,
Great job on the restoration. I bought a 78 Marty blue project last may, so I'll be using your post as a reference guide. Thanks again for taking great pics too.

Beautiful car. Are they gold snowflakes or is it the lighting? That would be the only thing I'd change, perfect.

Very impressive, my blue had rust advantages over your rig.  Once complete, love to see the finished product.
