ENGINE ID , NEED HELP!
« on: June 22, 2007, 08:27:09 AM »
Hello Everyone, I am a new member and a proud new owner of a 79' TA. I have loved these cars since I was 16 and now 15 years later I finally own one. Quick question, the engine is rebuilt and I am not sure if its a pontiac 400 or a chevy 400. I do know that its a 400 though, is there a way to identify the engine without removing the engine to look behind the block. As you all know the back of these engines but up agianst the firewall so its hard to read behind it. Any info would be helpful on this.
Thanks.

Welcome to 78TA.com!  Pontiac V8s are pretty distinctive.  SBCs used more cylinder head bolts and the water pumps are different, among other details.  Got any pictures?  That'd let us tell in a heartbeat.

Looks like a Poncho to me.  Looks too wide to be a Chevy motor.

I agree with turbota400 -- but a pic showing the water pump and more of the front of the engine would remove any doubt.  I dunno what kind of bracket's been worked out for the alternator -- probably had the idler pulley removed when the AC was taken off. :-\ :-\

yep. it's a Poncho.  You can tell by looking at where the intake attaches to the water pump.

I cant locate any numbers (becuse I really dont know exactly where to look). However, I did find some numbers on the block just under the valve cover on the driver side. They are a letter and 3 numbers, is this usefull, if so I can give you those numbers - its A198.
