3.55:1 ?? Hadn't heard of those being available for a GM. Are you referring to 3.42:1? That's how mine's setup currently - all waiting for the 200R4 swap.

My '78 came with 3:23's as well and I was pushing around the same rpm's as you Rick.
I really need an 200R4. Right now I've got a 2:56 posi in there......sloooooow.......but low rpms on the h.w.

OMG your killing me here TAZ

Low miles I haven't changed the rear end yet,but I was hoping to go with a 3.73 for street performance.
If you replace a 350TH with a 200R4 ,I read that a 3.73 rear end gear  would be more like a 4.10 beacuse of the 2.74  first gear compared to a 350TH .
So I am thinking maybe a Guy could go with a little taller dif is all .

But I was hoping you were lower in rpm on the highway ,although 2200 rpm is probably a good rpm to be at on the highway anyways with a 400 .
I wonder how a stroked 400 would pull with an OD . Maybe run fine under 2000 rpm on the hwy?

Ok, If I ever changer rear gears, I woukldnt go over a 3.42. Ask  Hammer, the 3.23's are more than enough off the line. lol

Well thats what I'm thinking to because of all the TQ we pontiac Guys have .
I gotta say I am not liking the 700R4 's  super low first gear the more I think about it. I have heard complaints about the nasty shifting into 2nd with a large jump like that . Would sure peel off a 255 -60r15 off the line though

My friend had a 2.73 in his 81 T/A and you could do some major high speed cruising down the highway .
I wonder what rear dif ratio you would need to run in order for your OD to be simular to the rpm's of a 2.73?

A quote from CHevy Hi Performance
 http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/148_0208_gear_ratio_calculating/index.html

Quote
 TH200-4R overdrive automatic utilizes a First gear of 2.74, a Second of 1.57, a Third of 1.00, and a 0.67 Overdrive. With this transmission's First gear ratio of 2.74 combined with a 3.73 axle ratio, the final drive ratio >> yields a 10.22 (2.74 x 3.73 = 10.22). In overdrive, the final drive ratio equates to a Bonneville-ready 2.49:1.

To me a 3.73 coupled to a 200R4 seems perfect . Lowmiles is you torque converter a hi stall ?
