Y88 Hard Top
« on: October 24, 2013, 11:56:42 AM »
OK Guys, Maybe some one can tell me if I have something special here.

I have a 1978 Trans Am with the factory Solar Gold paint, camel interior, gold exterior and interior badges.  The VIN# contains Y88 in the number sequence.

This car is a factory hard top, (No T Tops).

I have never heard of a true Y88 that was not a T Top car.

Any info. or comments would be helpful.

Thank you,

It is NOT a Y88. The VIN will not tell you if it is a Y88. Your cowl tag may have a Y88 or not but I am assuming yours does not have that since no hardtop Y88's were made. I wish there were hardtop Y88's but there is no such thing  :(.

Thank you for the quick response.  I am slowly restoring the car and if it was something special I would want to put it back to original.  I will post a picture of the cowl tag and the VIN plate, there is defiantly a Y88 on the cowl tag.

Thanks  Again RamAirV............

The cowl tag reads as follows;
BODY BY FISHER
ST 78 2FS87 N 174117BDY
R  62R  A51 50L  50U PNT
02C  Y88  TAN

vin#  2W87Z8N14S920

Do you have any thoughts?

Hmmm, one way to find out would be to get PHS documents. But then it may show the Y88 as a t-top, we don't know what a PHS for a hardtop Y88 would look like (assuming it even exists). Do you have any documentation on it? A roof swap could be likely, someone a long time ago could have gotten sick of leaking t-tops and swapped the roof.

hada76, remember, the t-top delete SE was in 77 and 79, there is no known t-top delete SE in 78.

So what happened? Is it a ttop delete or a roof swap?
