Topic: Jury-Rigged Shaker No More!

Hey fellas,

It has been a while since I've posted and the TA hasn't progressed much in the past few months due to work commitments, but I suppose I'll endure it since it pays for this hobby, haha.

Anyways, I'll be posting better pictures when I get back home (X-mas with the family), but right now I have the time to surf the internet and think about this issue. Bottom line my shaker setup is jury-rigged. Basically, the previous owner cut the bottom off the shaker and has it screwed into an aftermarket aircleaner assembly. It looks okay, but lately the shaker seems to rotate.... So, long story short, I'm planning to replace all that with a stock setup. I'm afraid I can't provide all the parts off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are going to be a few issues since I have a '74 block 455 in my '77. There are several parts of this renovation which I am unsure of the process or requirements, but thankfully I've found you guys!

So, first question first...can anyone confirm my suspicion that this is a 77 shaker?

Hey man,
      I cant confirm that its a '77, but it's definately for the 400 / 455 pontiac motor. I dont believe you'll have any problem because of the 74 455....... as long as you have the Rochester carb and the factory intake you'll be able to use the factory air cleaner / shaker set up.... that shaker on the link looks like it'd be the way to go.... good looking shaker.

Yes, it's an early '77 shaker....note the low profile of the shaker itself and the prominent ridge down the center.

Second question, what sort of air cleaner assembly should I be pursuing? I'm thinking this question might depend on my carb/intake setup, which I need to doublecheck at home. I see quite a few olds 403 setups available, but I'm thinking those would not work under any circumstances.

Correct -- you don't want the Olds 403 setup.  The hole is off-center to account for the engine mounting.  You want a setup from a 77-79 Pontiac 400 engine.  As long as you have a Q-jet and a cast iron Pontiac intake or an Edelbrock Performer intake you won't run into any problems with the shaker mounting.

I neglected to say this earlier, but thank you for the help so far identifying the shaker as a '77 and providing additional insight. So far things are coming together quite well.
