Title: 1978 Trans Am restoration
Post by: marx3 on February 21, 2014, 04:42:44 PM
I got my Trans Am today. It is a project car. It is kind of rough and needs paint, interiorwork and i havent had the engine fired up yet.
luckily it is in good shape bodywise. It has had the rear quarterpanels replaced with ones from a donorcar at some point, plus the passengerside floorboards have replaced with the ones from same donorcar. The quality of the work is good, not done the way I would have done it, but its nice enough that I wont bother redoing it.
The seats are in good condition, they just have the wrong color. the plastic panels are not so good. I will propably need to source some of these plastic trim parts from ebay or from a Camaro ( is this even possible?). The door panels, are okay, and the dash only has a small crack. Car has the original radio, pretty cool.
The car comes with 4 7" snowflakes for restauration, new flares, a new nose, new doorhandles and new door sill plates. weatherstripping look okay for now.

The car was originally Platinum silver with blue lombardy interior.
The plan is to build an SE clone. Not to fake the value of a true SE, but because I want a black and gold Trans Am.
I can do all but the painting myself.
I am going to try and paint or dye the interior black to the possible extend. ( I know were to buy new doorpanels and seatcovers if it does not work out and get to look decent, right  :) )

Ohh allright. This means the car is lacking the rear defroster :-/  I had hoped it would have this feature. This is the first disappointment with the car. Not a big deal:-)

The inlet needle and seat in the carb was seized, so it wouldn't start. I took it apart and fixed some of the appearant bugs. Now it runs and drives. It handles a little rough, but it wont need much to feel nice to drive.
Here in Denmark it is typical that all the old classic cars have wiring thats been tampered with. Since this car is freshly imported it is completely original. yaay! I only had to replace 6 bulbs to get the complete lighting to work like it shoud. Got started on sanding down the rear end to prepare for the painter.

they moved to the door panels in '77 I think...BTW that 3rd pic looks like the floor got pretty wet a one time

there is a company that sells rear windows with the defogger Element already in them. I bought one and had my builder install it. The only difference is the originals had a green element and the aftermarket windows have a "rust" colored element in them.
Title: Re: 1978 Trans Am restoration
Post by: marx3 on February 28, 2014, 02:39:51 PM
ohh well, actually, now that I think of it, I think they are in the doorpanels. I think the heaterelement had been leaking for some time. The floors have been changed from firewall and back to the backseat wells, but only in the passengerside. The element is also bypassed in the enginebay.
The car has also gotten new quarterpanels. All the sheets are brown, so they must have come from the same donorcar. The swap is not the quality I would have done, but its allright so I am not going to re-do it.

Regarding rearwindows with defog: do you have a companyname or a link?

apart from removing the windowtrim ( still waiting for my reomval tool ) rear half of the body is ready for the painter...

the right side of the car was damaged at some point during unloading at the docks somewhere in Europe. The fender is hurt the most. It is pretty bend out shape. The door is not so bad. It's going to take some effort to get it back in shape

Nose needs to be replaced. I am taking the fenders off before it goes to the painter. it also makes it easier to clean up the enginebay.

The doorpanels are a little rough. I am not sure I can use them. The cardboard is very uneven and bulgy at places.

The rear seats are pretty ok. The foam holds the shape, and the upholstery has a few flaws. I will remove the covers and try and dye them black. That way I can keep the car low budget for now. Down the road I am getting horsecollar foam and covers.

Thanks!

Got to take a look at the bent fender today. It is bad. Worse than I thought. The edge of the fender has been stretched forward alot from the blow. It dont look so bad in the picture, but the dent is large.
There was a rather large dent near the wheel opening as well. (http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/151182/Mobile%20Uploads/A8983106-5F7C-4041-8832-C1C8BB5EDE67_zpszztpfxad.jpg)

The gap between the door and the fender is waaay to large right now, even with the dents beat as much back into shape as possible. I fear that I might need to find another rightside fender :-/ This is really testing all my expertise as a panelbeater/bodyworker :-)

Thanks :-) The level of restoration is no match for yours though :-) I am shooting for solid driver with fresh paint and decals for starters:-)

btw confirmed today I have PT rear axlecode: 2.56 Posi. could be worse ( not much though :) )
and the engine is matching numbers. So far so good.

phheeew the inner fenders look good, and so does the rear frame. It has spots of rust, but nowhere near bad corrosion.

As you can see, it is going to take some work to get the fender to line up with the door properly. As of now the gap between the door and the fender is sliiiiightly off factory specs :-)

took some time today to take the rest of the interior apart
I am amazed at how rough the T-top installation actually is. I knew it was rough, but I had not imagined it would be THIS rough :-)

I need to get the car inspected to be able to pay import-taxes, so had the car put together for a drive. I will be my first real drive in the car.
This will be wednesday, then I have to get the car completely ready for going to the painters on monday. Cant wait!

I gave the car to the painters yesterday. The previous owner had already sanded down down most of the body and given it a flat black primer.
This was a couple of years ago and the painters found that light surface rust had started to appear. They decided to sand it down to bare metal everywhere.  Previous owner has changed rear quarterpanels and dropdowns. The quality of this repair not the at level I would have done myself ( I am a trained bodyworker/panelbeater ), buuut not so bad that it has to be re-done.

The front of the car is very straight

Paid my tax to get it registered in Denmark. It cost about 6000$. Though break, but that's what our welfare system is based on:-)
Ran out of gas on my celebration-run. What are the odds:-)

Got started on replacing the old leaky iron intake with an aluminum one. A surprise was waiting when I took off the valve covers... A lot of rust flakes and crud had build up. It seems the engine has been out of service for a long period at some point.

Already gave it a Bell-Add oil cleaner treatment. It is getting a few more:-)
The engine is coming out for a complete tear down and rebuild.
It's a definite keeper since it's a matching numbers car.
I like the idea of a 455, but I am not a racer. If my TA can pull a decent burnout like when you go pond-hopping, I am happy.
I plan on porting the heads, shave them a little and/or put in pistons with a smaller dish and combine it with a good RV cam to get the ideal dynamic compression ratio.
The engine already has a sound like one of the main bearings is gone, so there is not much expense to spare.
I am cleaning the mess as good as possible, changing the oil a few times and then driving in till the end of the summer (or the end of the engine)
Do I sound insane?

Exterior is 95% done. Need to modify the front flares, they are '79, and install the airdam.
Washed the car for the first time today to look for leaking seals. Only found two drops of water on the middle if the drivers side window. Should be and easy fix:-)

Sorry for the bad picures ( iPhone ). The bird was a little tricky to get on. I had it put on 99.9% dead on in the middle of the hood, but with a few creases and airbubbles that need to be punctured and heated in the sun. Overall all stripes and letters are sitting very sharp and evenly all around the car.

Unfortuneately the engine gave up on the first testdrive today.
I had put some effort into removing all the crap I found in each valvecover and top of each head. Unfortunately it most have blocked off and oilchannel shortly, cause oilpressure was missing yesterday, but was back this morning. The engine now runs like someone pulled 3-4 plug wires :-) The cam must have been flattened out by now. Dang!
I friend has a comletely rebuild 403 sitting in his garage, that he is about to put into his Delta 88 instead of the 307 that was in there. I can borrow it indefinately. I am throwing it inot my car asap.

so to comclude: all that needs to be done by now is get the flares right, get the seats re-upholstered and get something done about the door panels.  ohh and make the car run by it self... :-)

Thanks :-) I'm going to take some better closeup pictures of details!
Well, I knew the engine was in for it, I kept my fingers crossed it would live through the summer. It ran just fine, right up untill I found that mess in the lifter area and tryed to remove it. Some of all that stuff found its way to an oil channel and blocked it shortly. End of cam :-)
Now I am looking forward to rebuilding it completely. Never done everything alone before.

Well, I let the car sit for a while since the engine quit. I kind a lost the interest :-) So it just sat outside the shop for quite some time.

Then one day recently I pulled myself together and got the engine out.
Found the engine bay was in nice clean condition, ince all the oli and gunk was washed off. The firewall still shows the original red primer

Tore the engine competely apart and found a (very) bad center main bearing, a bad connecting rod bearing and a (very) worn stock cam. (http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h408/151182/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-09/8C8D0161-7412-479C-9BEC-9FB31F6B9F5E_zpso33syqhx.jpg) (http://s1108.photobucket.com/user/151182/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-09/8C8D0161-7412-479C-9BEC-9FB31F6B9F5E_zpso33syqhx.jpg.html)

but other than this, everything is in such healty condition that I dont need to bore the block out. This means I can afford to rebuild the engine right away. yaay! A comlete re-ring kit, including a used crank machined 10/10 under, all new bearings and a Crower 60240 cam, plus some other minor parts, are on its way. In the meantime I am cleaning everything down for a re-paint

As soon as the heads have been milled to up compression a bit, ( my buddy is a machinist and will do it for free ) they are getting painted along with the block.
Still need to install the headliner, doorpanels, finish carpet installation, and get the correct flares mounted.

thanks! My wife is pregnant, due mid march, so I guess this winther will the last chance to finish it in a LONG time ( you wold know, jupiterbandit ;) )
I painted the frame etc flat black and want to touch the inner fenders and the flat area with the emissionsdecal ( dont know its name in english ). I am not so sure these parts should be flat black... I am thinking more of a semi-gloss. I am shooting for completely stock original appearance ( keeping the clone original, like you say, hehe ).

The frame etc got a spray of rust flat black stone chip coating and had the painters mix a semi-gloss black for the front piece and the inner fenders, also painted the servo reservoir, brackets, pulleys and airfilter housing while I was at it.
I want to hit the stock appearance!  ( yes, I know the whole deal is supposed to be semi gloss, but the frame etc will have to wait untill next year )
All the correct decals are on their way :-)
