how to change ignition switch?
« on: February 21, 2010, 02:59:00 PM »
Well It was nice out today and was going to take the T/A for a spin but won't start.
not battery because everything works. just won't crank or nothing.
turn key all the way to the crank position and nothing . think it is the ignition switch?
If so how do you change it?

There's just two fasteners.  Disconnect the wiring and unfasten the switch and install a new one.  Don't confuse it with the key lock.  The ignition switch is on the lower column.

I am not sure wich one it is that don't work?
just know that when I turn the key I get nothing.
I did get it to work once but not long enought to crank overI am pretty sure it has something to do with the key part of it
how can I tell?
who would I contact to fix this?
seeing as I can't take the car to them to fix it.

The key simply moves a rod that's attached to the ignition switch.  You should be able to see the rod move when you turn the key.

Took car apart today and noticed that the  rod moves but doesn't push in the switch like it does not turn far enough also noticed after  I called a locksmith that the key does not spring back frum the run position.

That's not a thing a locksmith can or should fix.  The spring in the ignition switch functions that.  Sounds like your ignition switch is bad.

The ignition switch is down the column about a foot from the firewall.  You should be able to see the wiring harness connected to it.

Just follow the rod down the column.  It attaches to the ignition switch.

It's on the outside of the column held on by two fasteners.  Have you measured the voltage of your battery?

Don't confuse it with the key lock.  The ignition switch is on the lower column.
