Title: Tearin a perfectly good Special Edition apart !! May update !!
Post by: Gold78Spc on March 12, 2007, 04:23:27 PM
Well I have decided it was time to redo my engine compartment so here we go!!!!

Would like some input on some things:

I took lots of photos but any other suggestions on marking vacuum lines so I can put em all back in the right place?

Does the intake manifold get painted the same as the engine color?

Since I got it all tore apart what else would you fix/replace if it were your car.

Heres sort of a before shot.  Will take and post some shots of my progress.  Hope to have this project complete in less than a month!!

Excellent project.  I've been thinking about doing the same but just don't have time right now.  I'll be watching your progress very closely so make sure you take lots of pics and post them as you go.  I may not post much as I'll be learning by watching ;)

If you are shooting for a "factory correct" resto the answer is YES.  Engines were supplied already assembled, and they were painted with only the accessories missing, which were added afterwards before assembly into the vehicle.

I understand that the colors were changed to reflect changes in the emissions ratings/calibrations, so cars built after the date new environmental regs kicked in wouldn't get old (hence no longer compliant) engines -- the factory could tell at a glance if they were set up correctly or not by the color.

A good way to label vac. lines and wires is to use tape and put numbers and letters on it.  For example: Mark a vac. hose with "A" and mark the spot where it plugs in with the same.  If you use letters for vac. lines, use numbers for wiring.  If you somehow get past "Z" continue with "AA", "BB", "CC", etc.  I learned this from a Master Auto Body Tech.  Never had a problem since.

Yeah eroc I usually do it your way.  Then I am kicking myself trying to remember how to put it back together.  I like the tape idea.

A few years ago when I had to pull the engine out of my 95 Z71 I bought a Dymo label gun like you get at retail stores. It was very handy. But a sharpy and masking tape would be much cheaper. Those guns are any wheres from 20-40 bucks depending on which you get.

Man!! I should take the fenders off everytime I work on the car !!! The amout of room I have to work is amazing !!  I can hardly wait to change the spark plugs (can you believe they are AC Sparkplugs??? Do they even make those anymore ??)

I did the heater core last winter.  It started leaking towards the end of summer.  I am going to have to put a shout out for a part though.  I don't know what its called yet cuz I cant find my handy dandy parts manual I bought from El Conquistador but in the meanwhile I will tell you what it is.  It mounts on the intake on the left side of the carb.  It has a metal line coming out of the carb, through the intake, and back up and into the carb again.  On mine (and my spare engine) the metal line is rusted in two at the intake !!

Did find a little rot on the core support also below the battery tray.  Not sure what I am gonna do about that yet.  Weld in a new piece if I can or I guess pay a zillion bucks for another if I cant find one.

Well after my near death experience on roller skates I have finally been able to get back to work on the car !!
I am almost ready to put the engine back in !!  I decided since I had the engine and tranny out that now would be a good time to install a shift kit !! Yeahhhhhh !! Got to go back to Summitt Racing !!  Hopefully tomorrow the father in law and I will be able to get the core support welded back together.  If I hadn't said I found a little rot under the battery tray on the support so we cut the bad metal out and are welding in some new.  Anyways here's a few shots of what it's looking like now.  And yes I did paint the sparkplugs blue but don't worry those are the old plugs.

Rich, Brian's car is really shy.  I know this cause I have taken pictures of his car before and they all came out black.

Maybe it secretly wants to be a Bandit car ;)........or it's a Vampire :o :D

I will try to get some today or tomorrow.  Engine is back in and mostly hooked up, core support is fixed blasted and in primer (gonna paint it tomorrow). Have a few shots of the core support fix.  Not the prettiest fix and I am still hoping I don't have problems lining the fender up but the cosmetic parts of the repair won't be seen once the car is back together.  Anyways will update with some photos soon.

P.S. Hammer my car is not shy at all, its a complete photo whore !!!

Well finally some more pics.  I had more but some of them mysteriously disappeared off my camera. (http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/confused/confused0024.gif) (http://www.digeratimarketing.co.uk) All I have now is the end product of the core repair.  Anyways I finally got it fired yesterday and now I'm in vacuum line hell.  So much for marking them.  Why isn't there one book with a decent vacuum routing?

Well It's done.  Still have a few loose ends to wrap up (reroute some vacuum lines, electric lines, stickers, etc.) , but it does run and drive now.  I have notice I am having a hard time first putting the car into drive.  It wants to slip into neutral.  I did put on a shift kit.  Fluid level is good.  Once the car gets into drive I have no problems with it, it's just getting it there the first time.  Could it be an adjustment on the cable or something? Maybe one of my poorly or incorrectly routed vacuum lines?  Anyway heres some final results (taken at the Ohio Firebirds dust off).

It's not binding, I think its just a little out of adjustment.

Car looks great, Brian....what plant was your Y88 made at?  I'm trying to figure out what washer jar mine is supposed to have.  I don't have the delay wipers so the pump is mounted on the jug.  I think your shifting problem is just a linkage adjustment...and don't you dare work under that 2 ton vehicle without someone there to check up on you.   :o

Mine was made at Norwood.  It also has the pump mounted under the ww jar.  No worries about crawling under it solo.  And if I did I always pop in down on Jackstands.
