Title: Our 1978 Trans Am
Post by: 1978TA on June 20, 2007, 12:07:32 AM
Here is the Trans Am, in 2004, the day is was removed from its 26 years of undisturbed storage. This is as the car was, still quite clean. The car was inherited from my wifes father.

Here is a picture of the odometer. Yes, that is an original 1,999 miles! The car only has 2,300 miles on it now.

Here are a couple pictures of the vehicle after some minor mechanical maintenance and only a quick wash and wax. We also put new tires on the car, the square ones didn't drive so well!

How'd you get such a good shot on the odometer? I tried shooting my 1972 rolling over to 260,000, and this is what it turned out like:

That's with a 6 megapixel camera. >:(

1. Your camera is focusing on the objects in the reflection.
2. You have to wipe the lens of mayonaise. :)

Welcome to the forum Dwayne and Stephanie

Unfortunately the engine compartment has not been cleaned up at all. I think it is currently the weakest point of this car. I am not even sure how to really dress it up.

I will however post a few pictures.

Here are some engine pics right after the car was removed from storage. I have cleaned up most of the dust, but really haven't done any detailing. Look at all of the dust on the shaker!

I'll try to post some newer engine pics soon.

So do I.  In the early 80s I was faced with a choice between rampant rust or a rustproofing job.  I chose the rustproofing.  Now I have a car with vitually NO rust (the most rust on the car is in the stone chips in the paint) but it's a tar baby.  The engine also shows 30,XXX miles worth of grime from being driven.  Pics like these make me ashamed... :-[ :-[ :-[

Very nice survivor!!  :) You never see cars like that anymore.

Rick, I too noticed that the shaker was "decal free". It should have the 6.6 Liter decal since it has the L78 400. You would think it would have the shaker call out since it has the decals and hoodbird.  You can't see the back of the shaker good enough to tell if it is opened up or not, could be a shadow. I thought maybe it has a "back up" opened shaker on it, but like I said, it's hard to see.

I guess I don't know. I thought only the 6.6 T/A edition or the WS6 edition for 1978 had it, but maybe I'm wrong. I'll have to see if I can figure it out.

Since I've been reading everything T/A I can get my hands on before I buy, I did read somewhere that for a period of time '78's came without decals on the shaker.

It is awsome  don't clean it up you might damage the "Patina"  the only thing that needs attention is those cheap cogged autozone fan belts they shure don't belong on that NEW TRANS AM that you own...WOW that car is amazing it needs to be on the show room of a pontiac Dealership somewhere...

My first reaction when I saw the odometer was "BS"....then I saw the pictures of the interior.  That car hasn't really been driven at all.  It's so obvious from those shots.  That's a beautiful car.  And, it looks like it came out of a time capsule.  Beautiful!!!

Yes, in 1978, if you had the W72 Pontiac 400 the shaker had the "T/A 6.6" on the shaker.  If you had the L78 Pontiac 400, or the Olds 403, then you got NO decals on the shaker.  1978 was a strange year.  Also in 1978 there was no "Trans Am" decal on the front nose bumper.  Another thing in 1978, the tail lights had no silver ring on them.  It was black instead of silver.

Truely an incredible car.

Only a few things I noticed, whats with the gas pedal? Looks nothing like anything I've seen in a 2nd gen before. And please, clean that tar stuff off the rear passenger side panel, even though it probably already stained the plastic :( Atleast it appears it was stored in a very warm place :P

My '78 tail lights have the silver ring and although the car is new to me, I think they are original since the car has never been in an accident. The car ia an early '78 so mayve that's why.

I guess I never noticed anything strange about the gas pedal, but have to admit I never looked at gas pedals very closely. It is original though. As far as the tar leaking through, I was wondering who was going to be the first to notice it. I don't know what it is it is not a tar consistancy or color. It is a medium gray color and has more of a clay like consistancy. I can roll most of it off with my fingers. It doesn't stain the white color at all, however it does take a little work to get all the residue off.

I'll take a close-up pic of the pedals.

I only have three things to say, WOW WOW WOW  :D :D

Ok maybe I'll say more, that is now a ONE of a kind, due to condition and milage.
It's wonderful to know it has stayed in the familiy and has been passed down, its even better to know that you are enthusiastic about it and are taking the time to learn more about the car.

Congradualtions and welcome to the family, they are a fantastic bunch of folks here.

Would love to hear a little about it purchase history and why your wifes father parked it for so long.
As others have said, thanks so much for sharing with us.

Look forward to chating

Yeah, the gas pedal is different.  Never saw one like that before.  And, that gray body putty...that's normal for these cars.  I must have cleaned up a gallon of that stuff and never did find the end of it.  The silver around the tail lights is original.  My car has that.

I just noticed that you're missing one of the chrome rings....passenger rear.  That's why I never liked the rally wheels.  I had two complete sets of those rings stolen from about 1978 to 1980.  I finally put a set of 15X8 snowflake rims on.  I just threw the old rally's out last year....just heaved them into the trash bin.

I've never had any trim rings come off, but alot of center caps from snowflakes.
And not from driving, just some people shopping at midnight auto.
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine out here, just had his GTA wheels taken off his '83 Firebird!
A day after a guy went up to his front door, and asked if the car or wheels were for sale.
They even screwed up his front fenders, jacking up the car!
