Modern curb profiles come in two configurations -- roll back and chair back. The chair back is the traditional "step up" curb from the street. Those have fallen into disfavor somewhat because the vertical surface causes problems -- snowplows catch them, people trip on them, and tires rub on them. Anymore those are only used in places where you want to keep vehicles in their designated lanes, like in drive thru windows and where you pull up to drive thru bank windows, etc. The roll back curb has a more gradual profile so that tires run up on it rather than rub against it, and snowplows will deflect instead of jamming into it. Rollbacks are generally used in residential neighborhoods.
