Sealant on passenger kick panel of A/C car? What is it?
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:59:38 AM »
Just removing and replacing the passenger side kick panel on my 79 with A/C.  There is some type of gasket/sealant that is almost clay like in consistency surrounding the door that goes through this panel.  I am wondering what this stuff is called, where can I find it, and is there an alternative if I can't.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

I haven't specifically seen what you are talking about, but my brother works in the HVAC field and he used some gray putty/clay like stuff to seal the hole in the siding of my house around where the A/C lines go inside....I can't remember what it is called, but I'll find out....might be a close match?

Just as an FYI...I used marine grade caulk made by Life Caulk. It's meant to take oil/gas exposure. Did this for both kick panels and they haven't leaked yet.

just a urethane sealer, kinda like a gasket to keep your vent intake from blowing all over behind the panel and more directed  up towards your dash... its on both sides too by the way

Thanks, I hadn't taken off the other side yet.  Maybe I can find this at an auto body supply store?

I imagine some people just throw the panels back on but I like to do things as correctly as possible so that things work as they should.

They'll leak when it rains if you don't seal them.

And then your floors rust out. ;)

If it doesn't rain this weekend....that's exactly what I've got to do to my daughter's T/A.  The passenger side started leaking last winter.  She's really lucky I work on her car, otherwise she wouldn't be able to afford to own it.

Looks like I've settled on using the 3M ribbon sealer like what is used to do windsheilds.  I figure I'll layer it a few times and squish it in place as I install the panel.  I'll let you know how it works out.
