Why does the PHS doc show L78 on my 79 400 TA
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:52:54 PM »
I guess the subject heading really says it all.  I am curious as to why my PHS document shows L78 400 when 79 only had the W72 400.  I know there is probably something really simple and I will feel like a moron, but...It won't be the first time.  I really don't care either way as I know 79 only had one 400.  Anyway, thanks.

L78 is the Pontiac 400...W72 is the performance package added to the L78.

Would W72 upgrade be listed on the PHS stuff or is it just an understood thing?  Everything I read about 79 TA w/ the pontiac 400 refers to the 220 hp W72.  I have stuff like the WS6 package...  If I knew how you guys place large files on the forum I would post the doc.  When I tried to attach it, the "file was too large".

Some of the time, no it was not listed on the PHS documents.  The PHS is a copy of just the delaer invoice and does not list all options or upgrades, it is just a short list.  As far as posting documents, check out this for information how to post larger photos or documents:

The answer is a bit confusing, but here it is....

In 77-78 there were 2 versions of the 400, the L78 (180hp) and the L78 with the W72 option (200 in 77, 220 in 78).  In 79 though, since there was only one version, PMD simplified things and just used the L78 code to signify it for ordering purposes.  However on the build sheet of all 79 400 powered cars it will show the W72 perf pkg option (just like it did on all 77-78 W72s).

So technically, all 77-79 W72s are really L78s with the W72 option.

Think of it this way... in 79 the W72 was implicit with the L78 since the L78 couldn't be ordered without it...so they just ordered it as an L78 (and therefore that's what appears on the PHS invoice), but the W72 was still present behind the scenes.

Hope this helps.
