Title: 1977 project
Post by: oscardeuce on January 21, 2010, 08:57:25 PM
I bought in 1986, and had a beam fell on it in storage. Now, we're getting ready to go.

I have new fenders, rear quarters, decals and trim. I hope my body guy has it done by spring. It won't be high on his list, but he is an artist.

very nice ride.  buy spring?    O'oooooooooo I like the rally2's  . are you going to keep them on it. my 77 came with them.

Wow, too bad on that windsheild. They make new ones at YearOne for a little north of $200.

I also have to agree with 4SPEED on the wheels; very nice. I always thought the Rally II's looked better than the Snowflakes, IMO. Looks fairly solid. Keep us updated with the progress!

you could also order from the factory the rally II wheels color matched to the car. i had that on my brentwood brown 77 i ordered. the spokes all came in the brown.

sorry actually the spokes were silver but the part between that is usually dk grey is color keyed. no charge option.

Well, finally some movement on the project. I got a call from the shop doing the restoration. "Good news and badnews". Bad news, the rust ( an Ohio cal that saw snow before I bought it) on the rear end was worse than we thought. The good news, we found a donor car for the rear end for a good price and the guy doing the work was excited about how good it was.

I'll get some pics next week.

Here we go!

"donor car"

I have plenty of spares to sell, gauges, tad plastic trim panels, tan steering wheel, rear differential, the wheels form the donor car will post them with specific pics later..

One question, while the car is apart any ideas on how much a rebuild on the engine would be? Runs great, but I was thinking Murphy's Law would cause a problem when all is back together and pretty again.

Wow you actually have floors that are in tact.  I had a 12 inch by 14 inch hole where my feet went, only thing that kept my feet off the asphalt was the carpet on my drive home when I bought mine.
Good luck with it.

Some progress! The new body is stripped and sitting in the shop next to my car. The body guy should get the new roof on in the next 10 days.

Then we get the engine and tranny out for rebuild. Gads I have a bunch of parts at the shop.

Should I go standard cast exhaust manifold or "chrome" headers?

Title: Re: 1977 project

Looks like your project is going in the right direction!  Keep up the good work!  Unless you are building a really high HP motor, the consensus on this sight seems to be "factory style headers" which are cast iron manifolds based on Ram Air manifolds.  Ram Air Restoration is generally regarded as the best, but others sell similar ones.

http://www.ramairrestoration.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=31_2_21 (http://www.ramairrestoration.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=31_2_21)

I bought a pair but have not used them yet.  I have put headers in Trans Ams, and it is a PITA, not worth it if your motor doesn't "have" to have it..

The new roof is on!
Transmission rebuilt, and engine apart.

Well, baby steps. Filler welding and getting much closer to primer. Tranny rebuilt, engine in shop expect it in 2 weeks. New doors also in place. New fenders in primer

Well, I switched restoration companies. The first guy did great work, but was way too busy. Have more done in the last 3 weeks that the last 1-2 years. Here is a partial assembly photo.

(http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/rr232/oscardeuce/4704D28C-45D0-40B2-9B93-B602CFD1FD6A_zpszymguiqw.jpg) (http://s487.photobucket.com/user/oscardeuce/media/4704D28C-45D0-40B2-9B93-B602CFD1FD6A_zpszymguiqw.jpg.html)

The excitement returns!
The radiator mount is now off for blasting and priming!

The rebuilt Pontiac 400. I kept it pretty stock, higher compression pistons and a bit better cam.
