1979 Brake Lights?
« on: April 08, 2012, 05:21:23 PM »
Recently my breaklights went out , im not sure when they stopped working because i dont drive it too much but they DID work , any way to tell if its the wiring or just needs a bulb or something? also when working on them do you do it through the trunk or do you fiddle with that plastic piece that goes over it?

If you rear signals work the bulbs are good.  If they don't...could be the bulbs or wiring.

5 or 6 plastic wingnuts inside trunk will remove each side.

Hello,
I was just having a problem with both brake lights on my 79 Trans Am, the instrument lights also were out.  When I tilted the steering column all the way to the top position everything started working again.  If I tilt the steering wheel below the top position, all the lights go out again.

I need to pull the column apart still to see exactly what the issue is but its something you might want to check on yours.

I took it apart yesterday - there were 2 wires on the connector for the turn signal switch that were corroded to the point they were broken off but made contact with the tilt steering in top position..  I replaced the turn signal (multifunction switch) and everything works.

You might want to check that if you cant if you cant find anything else wrong.
