Yeah, there's definitely something really funny there.
Look at the door decals.
Both 64th Indy AND 22nd Daytona decals on the same car!
Same with the fender dacals - both Indy and NASCAR. ::)

that should bring the price down quite a bit... what do you think they can ask for her?
more than 5 grand?

I think I'd want an explaination at the very least before even making an offer on a car that is that questionable.
Then add the fact that they doubled the price on you when you showed interest. I'd be looking somewhere else.

Aside from Brett's knowledge of a guy from Florida, why would some
incorrect decals be a big deal. I mean, after all these years "most" TA's
have seen some changes emerge.

For example, on the pace cars, both 1980 and 1981, some folks put
a "turbo" sail panel bird on after a repaint. It is never seen on any pictures
of original cars, and most likely not correct - but it looks like it is. Doesn't
mean it's not what it is...

The only real way to tell is with the VIN and PHS.

In my experience, the seller doesn't always know that much about
these cars past it being a Trans Am. Obviously something like the Pace
car is a bit more obvious.

They also don't know always know about the market either, maybe they can
look up the car and hope, but that's not the market value.

I never use the "book" value or asking price as anything, I spend some
time researching the target, then offer my price, it either works after
some exchange - or it doesn't. When it doesn't, I move on.

There's also something to be said about "gut reaction" if someone's
trying to put one over on you, it's usually telling. That's just human
behavior 101.

I agree with Larry, find out what the story is about that pace car,
and "see" how you feel about the story. Get the VIN and get the
scoop from PHS.

 Go from there...

I have not been keeping up on this post but this morning decided to read through it.  There is just too many questions and concerns, in my book, to even consider these cars unless you get a satisfactory explanation from the seller on the questions folks have brought up on the cars.

The one thing, that is the safe thing to do, is to GET THE VIN#.  That will tell you whether the car is legit, or at least you can be 99.9% sure.  Anything else is just a waste of time, get the VIN and know what the car is. Anyone can put decals on any car and Larry brings up a valid point on having two sets of different decals on the car.  If the seller will not let you look at the VIN and copy it down from the car, walk away.  And don't take their word for it.  Walk over to the car and write it down.

Let us know how that goes.

When dealing in vin's- X marks the pot. On a 79 or 80 pace car the second digit is an "X".  Something like 2X87TAxxxxxxx on a 80 pace car or 2X87Z9xxxxxxx (4 speed) or 2X87K9xxxxxxx (auto) for a 79 10th car.

joe, i want to say thank you for your webpage on the 301. i am reading it right now. very good info there.
on the vin no. i have to wait a couple of weeks , the owner is out of town and i don't have access to the car.
:-\. but i gather all 'inteligence' and scrutinize her then

The last 5 digits in the VIN is the production number, it doesn't have anything to do with the type of vehicle.

From what I've read, the actual cars that saw duty had their A/C gear removed and rear end
gearing changed.

Here's some of the best pics of the duty cars...

and then from the race program, this tidbit:

i saw an add for a pace car with 80k miles for 7 grand.
it doesn't have the stickers on the door.
i am wondering anyway, the double feature on my door, does that decrease the value? and how much you guys think?

As long as it's a legitimate pace car, decals can be removed and replaced easily enough ;)
