Title: My new 1977 TA Down Under!
Post by: Stavvy on October 02, 2009, 12:08:29 AM
Hi Guys,

Am new to the forums and have just fulfilled a boyhood dream with a 77 TA of my own. I live in Melbourne, Australia
and have wanted one ever since I first saw Smokey and the Bandit. So now I'm about to take delivery a car that I found
in Arizona. All original except for CD player! I hope to get an original radio/CB to put in to finish properly!

Talk to you all soon,
Steve

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Am really happy to have found one in a Southern State! As I couldn't travel to inspect it, I was always a bit wary about buying from overseas. But the 77 TA with T-Tops is very rare down under, so to find one, dead straight with no rust is great! Plus she's only done 38,000 original miles. I can't wait!

She should arrive in the next week or so! Will let you all know how she runs.

Thanks again,
Steve

Hi Steve, welcome and nice ride man!! Good to see another beast down under. What area are you from in Melbourne? Would love to see it when it finally arrives, who is bringing it out here for you? Sorry I have a million questions, so I will leave it at that for now. Hopefully will meet you at a car show or something soon as our summer is about to fire up. Let us know how you go, exciting times for you!!

Cheers, Jeff

Gday Steve,  great to see another Aussie bring one down under.. we are about 10 mins away from Jeff (AussieTATA) and a few other locals have 77 black Trans Ams.  The Trans Ams in general are real head turners down here.  And we have a blast. Perfect timing in getting your car - as all the summer car events are just about to start. Cheers

Sharp eyes blue81ta, that is indeed my purchase! I can't wait for her to arrive and to all you Aussies on the site, I hope to catch you at a few car shows. It is amazing that down here you can get Mustangs at a dime a dozen, but T/A's seem few and far between! I guess that makes the T/A such a head turner down here. She's due to arrive in the next couple of weeks, so I'll post some pics as soon as she's here. Am also watching a factory fit CB on ebay that I might get and see what strain that puts on my marriage. My wife already believes that this purchase is the next decade of birthday's and christmases taken care of! Talks soon, Steve

Hi guys,
Well, getting very excited now! Boat arrives on Friday, so give or take a few days, I'll probably have her at home early next week. Such a laundry list of things to do with documents and registration but hope to have her on the road as soon as possible. I have a wedding in Port Arlington late November so we are hoping it's tip top for the drive down.
Talk soon,
Steve

Steve thats awesome, I bet you are excited!! Who imported it for you? Which company?

Not being smart or anything, but you do know what it will take to get registered?
Here is a quick heads up if you don't know already, as myself and Trans am Oz just recently got ours registered here in Vic.
You will need a Roadworthy and an Engineers Certificate plus all your import docs.
The Engineers will definately want a few modifications done such as:
Amber turn signals on rear taillights and also seperate front ones. eg no parkers/turnsignals and seperate Brakes/Turnsignals.
Rear Seatbelts will need to be lap and sash
Sound Test. eg car will need to be less than 98db
Headlights changed to correct side of road.

Depending on Engineer, the list could be very long or very short, so get a couple of opinions.

Hope all goes well for you.

Cheers, Jeff.

Thanks OzTambo and for sure when your in this neck of the woods, drop us a line and we will definitely meet up for a cruise. Have our own Aussie Bandit Run :P
Plenty of us here to help Steve get his ride on the road. I just hope he knows its not a matter of it arriving and just taking it to Vicroads for rego, it will take some time, thats all. And a few of us just recently done it.

Thanks Lads,
Yep, I have my checklist of things Vicroads require. Once it's here I'll be sure to take you up on your kind offers for help. A mate has put me on to a mechanic friend of his who specializes in classics. He also let me know that there are some mechanics out there who delight in figuring out how much you have to spend and then spending it! Mind you I have waited about 25 years ffor this car, I can wait a few weeks longer to get everything ship shape. Thanks for the advice guys! Steve

Hi Guys,
Look what Santa put up my driveway today!!!! It has been like a kids birthday. It's now 9pm and I've only just left it alone!
The only downside has been a) I was at work for some of the day and b) It hasn't started yet. I gave the battery a bit of charge but all I get is a clicking sound with a bit of a whine.
Any of you guys have trouble starting up after delivery from overseas?
Anyway, here are a few photos from today, will let you know how I get on with waking her up! Aussie guys, cant wait to catch up in person and meet you all!
Steve

Congratz Steve, good to hear she arrived safe and sound! I know how you feel.
My battery was knackered, so I threw a brand new one in, and she fired straight away!!  ;D
Even threw a 28 day permit on the dash and drove it across Melbourne.
Hope you get to hear her run soon.

Got a couple of local shows coming up next month:
GM Day @ Yarraglen 8th Nov
American Breed 2009 @ The Manhattan 22nd Nov

Hopefully we will see you there?

Cheers, Jeff.

Hi Jeff,
Would you believe I have a wedding in South Australia on the 8th and a wedding in Port Arlington on the 22nd!!!
Curses! Have had a great time so far checking it all out. Have found out that it has the Pontiac 400 engine with the performance package! Everything (apart from a few trim type pieces) are in great nick and I can't wait to connect a new battery (hopefully today) and start her up! See you soon (hopefully), Steve

Make sure there is gas in it! lol I heard you were supposed to drain most of the gas before shipping it overseas. If it isnt the culprit then it's probably the battery.

She sure is a beauty!

Congrats Steve

Glad to hear she landed all safe and sound

Sounds like the battery is dead as everyone else has said..have heard most transport companies remove the batteries before transit so it should have been a bonus but all you got was a paper weight  ::)

Read your remarks  about the motor and WS6 package...did you get a build sheet with the car or the PHS to show what is original on the car?

Hi Guys,
Yep you were all right!!! New battery was found and bought. Once I installed that, she turned over about 5 times and then woke the neighbours!!! She sounds great! Was very happy. Next job is to take her for a spin and get her roadworthy certified for Vicroads. Have a few  contacts for that so that is the next step!Talk soon, Steve

Well, the permit was purchased and I drove her across town today to the mechanic that will make her aussie road legal! Very nerve wracking but awesome fun! It was a pity we have so many traffic lights as I couldn't really take off but I just love the fact that I was passing Daewoo's, Hyundais and the like and all their heads were turning straight away. I got to the mechanics and got stopped by a guy on a bike who said "Smokey and the Bandit" then wanted to know where I got it and how much. She is in such great nick already but I'm looking forward to really starting to restore her properly! Will keep you all up to date. By the way she has been named Dixie by a work colleague who helped me bring it in. It has stuck with my daughters so... Dixie she is!

Hey guys,

Sorry it's been so long, what with christmas break and everything, time gets away! Dixie is going great! She's had a few trips to the mechanic and we are now running really well with a full tune up, new radiator core, belts pipes etc! Have also spruced her with a few bits and pieces from Fbodywarehouse & Trans Ams of Florida. They send parts down to Australia so it's great! Am having a great time with her. Not sure how many of you are in Melbourne but hopefully I will have her at the Born in the USA Car Show at Docklands, March 7. Will post some shots soon. Hope you are all driving well!

Hey guys,
Well the Born in the USA car show was run on the Sunday at Docklands, and the weather held beautifully!! Was a great day with about 80 cars in attendance. I rocked up not knowing anything about car shows! Apparently everything is judged and prizes awarded at the end of the day. And we were picked as one of the top ten cars in show! Kids are now fighting over the trophy! Can't wait to keep fixing her up to go to more!

Found this pic of your car Steve.

Looking good mate, seemed a few cars risked the weather and went along.
Congrats on the prize, hope to see at a few other outings there's a show in 2 weeks in Lilydale a few of us are heading along to if you want to come along and show us Dixie?
Noticed you have club plates on, which club did you join???

Hope to see Dixie soon.

Hey Andrew,
Where did you find that!? Thats me in the orange shirt chatting to an American guy and his partner. As you can see the sun was out and the weather was pretty clear for the day. I was a member of the Chevy Car club before I got the car. They have a Comaro, Trans Am, Firebird subgroup that meets not far from work. It was good fun seeing people get so much enjoyment out of Dixie!
