Topic: Automatic Shifter Knob Assembly

Hey guys, I have a question about the shifter knob on a automatic shifter. I basically redid the entire interior of my 1981 turbo trans am including repairing the floor pans. I had reinstalled the whole new interior and got to the shifter knob. I know that there is a snap ring which keeps the shifter knob from moving upwards, but what is it that keeps the shifter knob from sliding down the actual shifter lever? I currently just have a large O-ring below the shifter knob to keep it from falling down, but it does not work very well and I would like to put it back together right if possible. Can anyone let me know what im missing? Thanks ahead of time!

There are 2 "stubs" inside the shifter knob that (when they meet the notches (in the top of the shaft) of the shifter) prevent the knob from going down further than it should.

Thanks for the help. Is there any way someone can post a picture of what these "stubs" are supposed to look like and where they are supposed to be? I am pretty sure mine have been broken off as I can not seem to find anything like that on my knob. Also, is there any way I can put the stubs back on or will I need to buy a whole new shifter knob? They are in the top (across from each other) of the hole (in the knob) that the shifter shaft slides through.
If they are broken off, you would need a new shifter knob.

I don't believe the shift knob for an automatic is repro'd....I'd check eBay and look for a good used one.

Ames ( www.amesperf.com ) carries a GM "shift knob retaining clip" (part # FR591, FR591P, or FR591Q)which might work (I haven't seen/used one so I couldn't vouch for it.
Their part is a separate piece whereas in the knobs I have, the "stubs" are molded into the knob itself.
