Ut OH! Why all of a sudden, paint is chipping away?
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:09:15 PM »
Very strange, if you ask me.  I just noticed today that out of no where, paint is chipping away.
I have washed it only once since I have owned it, which was in Nov. 2009

OMG!  I know exactly what it is!!!

The car cover!
And here Frank bought a very expensive one that is soft.  It has to be the reason.
You think?

A car cover won't cause paint to chip...sounds like poor prep before it's last paint.

i would have to agree with 79ws6resto. a car cover would cause like scratches due to wind and stuff like that, not paint chips

Heidi...do you have young kids? That could potentially lob/toss/punk/pass/kick/throw/drop something on the TA?

Other than that, I'd agree with Jeff and KJ - bad paint prep. Car cover wouldn't cause that.

Only way I see a car cover chipping paint is if it has steel/brass grommets to tie it down to the car. Those grommets can cause alot of damage!

Bad prep job on the prior paint job! Probably was done quick to sell it, won't be the first time someone unethical did that!

Not to worry -- you won't be the first person who got sucked in by a pretty paint job, only to find out later than not all the glitters is gold. ;)

It's only money ... we all own these cars because they're fun.  If there weren't little problems, we'd be on the Mercedes forum talking about grey poupon or vacationing in the Hamptons.

from my experience if you have large amount of bondo in one area sometimes extreme temp changes will cause it to shrink and to crack.
but then again that goes back to a bad prep job like the othere said.

I dunno -- improper mixing of the bondo might be another contributing factor -- I've seen some pretty thick globs that were well mixed that held up.  But most folks who stick it on that thick also probably don't know how to mix it well, which would make it chunk off pretty easily with temperature changes...
