ENGINE CODE HELP PART 2
« on: June 27, 2007, 05:54:44 PM »
Hello all
So i got to diggin up my engine to locate some numbers that I could use to figure out what year and make my engine is. I couldnt quite pull the engine because I dont a hoist but I got all components out and the following are numbers I found.

passenger side on block = GM5
driver side on block = 400
UNDER WATER PUMP ON BLOCK = 527292 (OR 97)
passenger and driver side on block = 6X
driver side under heads = A198
passenger side under head = A200

Does anyone have info for me to use on this engine when ordering headers, torque converter cover, valve covers, etc.
THANKS!!!!

Its a 400.  The casting code is on the back of the engine,  passenger side, near the top by the intake valley pan. That will tell you the date it was cast.  That number under the water pump i believe is the vin code.  if those 6 numbers match the last 6 in your vin then its an original engine and date is solved.

can you tell me if its a chevy 400 or pontiac 400? The "GM" stamp is throwing me off, I know GM produced motors for all different manufacturers but how do I know if its a chevy or pontiac when ordering replacement parts?

Got a picture?  If you have a pic of the front of the engine showing the water pump, we can tell you in about 0.5 second which you have beyond a shadow of a doubt. ;)
