18 inch snowflakes from year one
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:45:37 PM »
I am completing the resto on my 1977 T/A clone, (originally a esprit car).  I am seriously considering the 18 or 17 inch snowflake rims from year one.  Does anybody have an idea about the amount of offset needed for the birds?
I would like to put 18 x 10 on front and rear or possibly the 17 x 9 all around,  ( haven't decided on how much tire I want under the car,)  Any opinions or suggestions would be helpful.  Thank You, Dan

I think 17x8 up front and 18x9 out back would look very cool.

Welcome to 78TA.com!  We all love pictures, so post some up of your ride!  Don't wait until it's all finished -- we all have project cars! ;)

You need to talk to 78TA.com member O'Neall.  He's got a set of the 17" YO wheels for his car which is currently in restoration.  He can fill you in on all the details he's researched before dropping his $. :) :)

Thanks for the input,  I do have pics of the entire resto.  This has been a two year project and I am very glad to say it looks like I will be able to wrap it up In May.  Dan

Hi, yeah I have a set of the 17" YR1 flakes.  First off, you won't be able stagger them (17 front, 18 rear) because the 17s and 18s have different rim lips (17s have stepped lip like in my avatar, 18s have rolled lip like on the Burt Reynolds Edition T/As).

As to backspacking, it sorta depends on what you're going to be doing with the car.  I ordered their 17x9s all around with 5" backspace (which would be 0 offset), but it turns out that they are advertising them incorrectly as they are really 17x9.5 inches. >:(  If they'd have told me that I'd have probably gone with 5.25" all around... or gone with 17x8s up front with 4.5" backspace and 17x9.5" out back with either 5" or 5.25".  Here's a pic of a set of 17x9.5s all around with 5" backspace.  It looks great, but the owner of this car has an Air Ride suspension that he uses to lower the car way down and therefore the 5" backspace was not quite enough for him... especially up front. (BTW, tire sizes on these pics are 275/40/17 up front and 285/40/17 out back).

Either way they are awesome rims and I can't wait to see them on my car.  Here's a short vid of my rims that were custom painted for my 77 Y81 SE.

I got my ordered the other day 18x12 rear, and 18x10 front, 335's in the rear, and 295 in the front, but I will not have a sub frame when they go on, so clearance isnt a issue

Very nice rims!  I JUST got a TATA and can't wait to start rebuilding it.  I am looking to put snowflakes on it though since I have the turbo wheels.  But yes the Turbos will be cleaned and stored for when I do need to put them on or if I sell the car.  I like the pic of the formula but maybe the back raised just a little
