Topic: Need advice on shaker hood

I have a 1974 400 pontiac motor with a 1979 pontiac firebird.. What I need help with is I have the hood but need a scoop and air cleaner.. What should I get and  is there a difference in the scoops and air cleaner between the years.. I am going to Carlisle PA on April 21st.. Any advice

Yes There are many different styles of shakers.  The 76 and older shakers are more rounded at the front, the 77 and later are more of a v shape than round. "v" is a little exaggerated but I don't know what else to call it.  The shakers also vary in height.  You could check around on hitmans site or just wait for him to sign on and he will give you the correct height of the 79 Shaker scoop.  There is also a special air cleaner for the 400 with a shaker.  I looked for a part number on mine but of course there is none.  It is sort of a weird air cleaner though because the lid is about 3 inches in diameter smaller than the base.

Any 77 to 79 that came with a pontiac 400 will work and be the right shape.  Other years from earlier years will work also , but may the wrong shape or height.

Yes, the 76 and earlier is rounded...


The 1977 is 2 inches tall with a raised lip down the centerline....


The 1978 to 1981 is 2 1/2 inches tall with no raised ceneterline...


The 400 shaker scoop base is pretty much centered on the scoop....


and the 403 shaker scoop is offset more towards the front left....
