1979 indefication
« on: December 14, 2007, 03:17:18 PM »
hey, im looking for other ways to identify my car other than the cowl tag, vin#, and build sheet, as i cant rely on any of these. is there any other codes around the car that i can use to trace the car?

Why can't you count on all of those?
The build sheet is always better than the PHS sent invoice.
The build sheet will have the vin, that matches the vin of the car.
Are there things missing or something?

Wow!
Not sure what to say about all that.
You need a vin to title and drive the car on the street.
Not sure what to say to help you.

The vin should be on the firewall kind of behind the heater box.  I forget if you read it from the engine side or the interior side.  But you can see it from the inside for sure...it might be backwards though.

Yeah, RH engine side...it's actually stamped twice (close to each other) behind the A/C-heater box.

Hey dude!  Don't wait until it's finished!  The time to start taking pics and telling us about it is NOW!  Otherwise you'll get busy and forget to take a few pics, then a few more, and then a few more yet until you realize you didn't hardly take any pics at all!  :-\ ;)

Pretty soon you'll be one of those show-offs with a car that has an engine, tires, it moves under it's own power, etc ;) :D :D

We'd like pix now!  ;D

Now you know the cowl plate won't have any numbers to match the VIN right? Have you compared the codes on it to the page here?

http://www.78ta.com/cowl1979.htm

That will give you the paint and interior colors as well as a few other things.

Well the thing is that I don't believe in the cowl tag because it says I have a base bird and and not a trans am and well i find it hard to believe that someone replaced all the sheet metal and emblems on the car to make it trans am clone. What should match my cowl tag and my vin is the fact that its a trans am.  Thats why I want the vin cause then ill just sent it phs and get exactly what my car was and ill know right away if how much my car was messed with in the past.  The cowl tag doesn't look like its stock anyhow, it looks like it was removed at one point cause the screws aren't nice and flush, looks like it was put on very carelessly, however all the interior and exterior codes match except the fact it says its not a trans am.

All cowl plates will have the marking for a Firebird.
Some will near the bottom, have WS4 stamped.
You just may have the right one.
