I cannot believe what was in the box!!!
« on: September 29, 2007, 01:40:42 AM »
I've been searching for someone to replate/restore the grilles for my 76 TA and so far the prices have been insane! During my search I stumbled across a pair (left and right) of NOS 1976 Trans am grilles in the box for less than what it was going to cost to get mine restored. After some haggling (gotta cut em' a little or it's not fun) I bought them. They shipped two days apart and the first one arrived today. My car is just a regular run of the mill black 455 4 speed car. Here is a picture of the grille that arrived today. Anyone notice the problem? Is this good luck or bad? What are the chances the other grille will be a mate to this one??

What's she wearing now? Come on!

Yeah, I couldn't believe my eyes. I was very surprised to find a set of regular grilles. Being one year only I thought locating a set would be out of the question. I never dreamed an SE grille would still be floating around. If the other box has an SE grille when it arrives I'll sell them both. If I end up with a mixed pair I'm not too sure what I'm going to do.  :-\

Ouch!  That is rotten luck!  You don't see the SE grilles much anymore.  I bet you would have flipped out if they both would have arrived as SEs.

I'd resell the gold one and hunt down another black one.

Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there looking for the gold grilles.

I would've needed oxygen for sure if that second grille would have been gold. Everybody at work is kind of jumping on board helping me nail down some of the last few parts. So, when the guard alerted us that UPS was on-site a huge huddle started forming around the box.  ;D

I'd resell the gold one and hunt down another black one.
Hey logik, I think that's the plan for right now. I may be wrong here but I think the se/le grilles must have been factory units that were simply painted and used on the SE's. I'd like to find an original se/le car and check the grille to see if they have a different part number.
I'd resell the gold one and hunt down another black one.

Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there looking for the gold grilles.
Actually I've only had a few nibbles about the gold grille. I'd trade even for a black grille that has never been painted in NOS condition

True that ;)
I'll keep ya posted on the hunt for a black one.

Did Hurst add the whole SE/LE package such as T-Tops, pin striping, decals, and all the gold stuff or did they just install the tops and then send the cars back to GM. I'm a nut for the 76's but must admit I don't really know how the SE/LE car were built.

To the best of my knowledge, I would think Hurst did only the roof cut-out but you might wanna verify that with someone else to be sure.

The grilles that came with Jeri's SE don't have any trace of gold on them so I don't know if they are the originals or not. I'll get the part # from them and compare to the other '76 grilles I have and let you know if there is any difference.

Ah crap! What a bummer. Hope everything works itself out Robert. I would talk to Hammer about any SE questions you have.

Instead of painting the gold one black, paint the black one gold and sell THAT as a set.
