W72 questions
« on: April 17, 2007, 08:24:03 PM »
Hello,I have a 77 Formula W72 4speed that needs the correct engine, distr.,carb and exhausts. I believe I have the right intake, how would I go about locating these parts? Is it difficult to find?
Also I have a 78 W72 4speed Trans Am that is all there but I was wondering if the only options being A/C and tilt wheel are a rarity being a  TA?
Thanks for any info

Sometimes you see these parts on ebay, but I would check with John's site before purchasing anything.  He list all the correct part numbers for W72 engines.

My four speed W72 car came only with A/C.  Not even a glove box light.  So, I don't think your T/A is rare.

On the Formula, now that's rare.  I don't think they made many 1977 W72 Formula's.  You see those engines come up on ebay every once in a while, but not often.  I doubt you'll find one.  Your best bet may be to buy a clunker W72 rust bucket T/A as a donor car.  Since the engine won't be original to the car, you might want to get a 78 since they are more plentiful and have a little more horsepower.

During the 1977 model year Pontiac produced 1,735 Formulas with W72 and 4-speed transmission.  If you are looking for the correct 1977 engine it will have code WA for a 4-speed car

Thanks for the replies. I checked my storage and do have a WA block. Now I need to find 6x-4 heads with the approx. build date of the car? Or does that matter? Getting the distr. and carb shouldn't be difficult.
I also have #'s matching loaded 77 Formula w/t-tops and W72 auto.,what are it's production #'s?thanks

Oh yeah...no problem finding the carb!  You've got to be joking!  Those carbs are extremely hard to find and very expensive when you do find one.  Luckily, my car has the original carb.  If you do find one, it will go for somewhere around $200 give or take a little.  Then you need to rebuild it.  A "regular" carb for a 400 can be bought for $50 give or take...

Well either you're confused or have lots of cars because in your original post you said you had a 77 Formula with T-Tops auto....now you say you've got a 77 Formula with T-Tops 4 speed.  So which is it?  They made 756 W72 Formula's with an automatic transmission according to John's paper....and he's pretty darn accurate.  He doesn't breakdown the T-Top cars, but they would bring the number down quite a bit in my opinion.

If you have 3 second gen birds.....I'm really, really jealous.  And, all are W72 cars.  Save some for the rest of us.

well my quest begins for the carb first.
in my orig post i was reffering to my 77 formula w72  4-speed(which is loaded w/lombardy int. and t-tops)
then i asked a question about my 78 w72 4-speed ta(coupe)
then i was asking about prod.#'s on my 77 w72 formula auto.
the latter two don't need any parts but the first one needs correct engine
my sad story is i had a 77 w72 4-speed ta w/rear console and deluxe int. but sold it to get some land...still kicking myself

I paid $550 for my numbers matching rebuilt W72 carb on ebay.
Then when I got it, I still had to do some work on it.
Good luck.

The carb is 17057263 for the '77 W72/ 4-speed. I got lucky and found mine at Frank's Pontiac parts for 90.00. Needs rebuilt though. They are rarer than hen's teeth!  My '77 Formula W72/4-speed came off the assembly line at 3522 lbs.
