All Firebirds, including the Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am will have the 2FS87 on the cowl plate.
Fisher made the bodies, and they were all Firebirds.
Like I said, some Trans Ams got the WS4 with the codes alittle bit lower on the cowl plate, with the options.
That's why I think your cowl plate is probably the correct one.
Did you vertify the paint code to the car itself, or the build sheet?

Ok then if they all have it, it may be the right cowl tag cause all the codes on it match the car. So now if that is the right cowl plate I'm still am missing the build sheet an stuff so i should still send my vin to phs to get all the other stuff on my car? because i know it was worked on alot and i don't know say if the 3.08 gears in the car are the ones it came with.
Also I usually forget this question, but was there a option for a recaro racing seats. some, cause I've got a set and its the same material and stuff just that are racing style seats. I don't know if i twas like a special dealer option or someone just decided to have a set made.

Pontiac didn't start using Recaros until 1981, and in the NASCAR Daytona Turbo Trans Am, and they were red/black cloth material.
Anyone could buy Recaros, and install them into any car.
I did, in my modded 1981 Turbo Trans Am, and as did a few of my friends with their cars.
I don't believe that PHS will give you the rear axle code that your car should have.
Usually, it just lists the big options.

Ok, thanks. well that clears up alot.
How do i go about figuring out if its a ws6 or not.  cause i was reading decoding the build sheet part of the site and it says that the steering code and stabilizer bar codes can determine that?

Either PHS or the build sheet will prove that.
Any owner could install the WS6 stuff on the car.
I did with my 1979 ragto Trans Am.
The wasn't a WS6 car.

Thanks, I'm getting the PHS stuff as soon as i can.  Cause it gives the most information about my car that I can get, seeing as how I don't have a build sheet.

Okay I’m a bit confused here … if all Firebirds, including the Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am will have the 2FS87 on the cowl plate then how come it says here: http://www.78ta.com/cowl1981.htm
S - Series
S - Firebird
T - Esprit
U - Formula
W - Trans Am
This is for 79, 80, and 81s  ???
1981 Trans Am
2008 BMW 320

Don't know.
Just so you know, I just went outside and checked both my '79 ragtop Trans Am, and my modded '81 Turbo Trans Am, and they all have the FS on the body cowl plate.
Not sure where Brett got his info, but the other letters are always in the vin, not the cowl plate.

Yeah that confused me but as long as i can get my vin# and send it to PHS thats all that really counts right now cause that will tell me alot of what i need to know. The fact the rest of cowl plate matches the rest of the car and other people have the same thing on the tag is enough for me to believe its right.

LIke I said earlier, if you have any doubts about the dash VIN, check the VIN's under the heater/A/C box...they should match your dash VIN exactly.
