1978 W72 dyno runs
« on: May 22, 2016, 01:39:44 PM »
Hello everyone, I posted this up at TAC and wanted to share here. I have a 1978 T/A W72 auto with 18,000 original miles. This car is all original with the exception that the one and only previous owner had removed the cat and replaced with a "test Pipe". I did a dyno run and then installed a Pypes duel exhaust with X pipe, Ram Air exhaust manifolds and a Cliff Ruggles HP Carb rebuilt kit so here are the numbers. ALL ARE REAR WHEEL:

Stock 177 HP and 239 TQ with the secondaries opening at 4,500 RPM due to scraping the inner carb body.

now with the listed mods:

240 HP @ 4,800 RPMS and 287 TQ @ 4,000 RPMS

What a difference for just a few bolt ons! Also note that stock numbers were happening at 4,000 RPMS for HP and 2,800 for TQ the mods have really fattened up the power band

Wow that's +63HP! That's a pretty decent improvement. Did you also change gear ratio?

No; it has a 3:23 from the factory and I'm happy with it.

240 rwhp is at least 300-340 hp at the flywheel- goes to show you how even simple upgrades make Pontiac V-8's come alive. Imagine how your W72 would perform with a 250 cfm port job done to the heads, even more SCR, and a more aggressive cam. It's the sum total of parts working together that produces double the factory output, even on pump gas.
