That and the wheels Jeff!

I'm trying to do my project on a shoe string budget. However, that shoe string keeps gaining length!!

AND since my sis was born in 76 that front end is giving me ideas....

VERY nice '76 T/A...reminds me of the one that "got away" in 1986.  I was living in northern California and almost bought a silver '76 455/four speed with a red interior.  to this day, I still wonder why I passed on it.

Here's the one that DIDN'T get away...(sorry for the grainy photograph, I had to scan it from a print)

I like that license plate "76 HABU".  "Habu" is a poisonous and aggessive snake in Okinawa, Japan.

Of course I love that car too, absolutely gorgeous!!  Okay, time go buy a lottery ticket (ha ha).

Wow, I haven't run into too many people that actually know what "Habu" means!!  It's in part a tribute to my father who was in the Air Force (crypto analysis) and loved the SR-71 blackbird spyplane.  There was a detachment stationed on Okinawa when we lived there and the local population coined the nickname of "habu" for the aircraft.  The flight crews also adopted the nickname and referred to themselves as "Habus".  Anyway, this was my dad's favorite car in the collection and when I decided to get personalized plates a few years back, it was a no brainer.

Also, apologies to all for being a bit of a goober with respect to posting photographs.  I've gon back and re-sized everything and am re-posting.  Hopefully I got it right this time.

Wow, that is really cool.  I was stationed at Kadena (with the 353d Special Operations Group (AFSOC)) 1997-2000, but the SR-71 was long gone by then.  There is a tribute marker to the SR-71 on perimeter road.  My wife and I actually drove over a habu on the way home one night in base housing, and thought we killed it; I drove back around to get a look at it and it was still alive, coiled up and striked at my front right tire.

They say the Okinawains were elated to see the SR-71 permanently leave Kadena because the plane supposedly shattered windows in off base residences during takeoff.

W72--

Small world!

One of the most memorable moments with my dad happened while we were driving along the perimeter of Kadena AFB one Saturday (well, he was driving...I'm not THAT old).  We were north of Gate #3 and rapidly approaching the west side of the airfield where the end of the runway is out of site as the road dips down.  We heard the distinctive spound of a jet powering up for take-off.  We could tell it was heading our way, I turned to my dad and said:  "That doesn't SOUND like a buff."

Seconds later just as we got to the end of the runway, a SR-71 came SCREAMING over the roof of the car, it couldn't have been more than a hundred feet or so off the ground.  I quickly stuck my head out of the passenger window and looked up in time to see the wheels retracting and locking into place.  W72, it shook the car so violently, I swear I could feel the marrow in my bones vibrate.  The SR-71 was out of sight in seconds.  My dad and I were so buzzed on the adrenalin rush, we had to pull over.

It comes as no surprise the locals had to file a few claims for broken windows.

I happened to cross paths with a gentleman several years ago that lives about a half mile from my house.  He flew U2s, wild weasels, and SR-71s during Vietnam and recently retired as an airline pilot for American Airlines.  He loves the '76 Trans Am as well and I always throw in Meatloaf "Bat out of Hell" (it was sort of a theme song for the SR-71 crews) whenever we go for a spin.  Lots of great stories when we get together!!
