Title: 04-06 GTO T56 swap ??
Post by: Platinum1_Rob on July 25, 2013, 09:06:05 PM
Has anyone used a 04-06 GTO T56 transmission in a swap? I came across a good deal on one. I dont see very many people talking about that year T56. I usually see everyone refering to the 93-97 or 98-02 T56? Im wanting to put one in my 78TA. It has a pontiac 400 motor and 700r4 in it now. If someone has some info on that transmission it would be appreciated.

Well, it is essentially the same trans as the 98-02 F-Body T56. I don't know the physical differences but, the F-Body has a torque arm, GTO does not. So that aspect is different. They may use different gear ratios and or different input shafts and output shafts. So, just do your research. The later T56's use an internal concentric slave cylinder instead of an external slave like the earlier 93-97. Which makes it a bit of pain to change if it starts leaking, so I'd urge you to replace it while it's out before installing for good measure. Doubt you'd like to pull it twice. =)

Ok thanks your for help. Do you know anything about the bellhousings? I wonder if the BOP quicktime bellhousing will work with it. Well back to the research

Just some quick info on the T56. The center section of ALL T56 transmissions are the same. Granted some had different gears but the main center housings are the same. Just the front plates and tail housings are different.

That said the GTO T56 as said is practically the same as the LS1 F-body version. The main differences is the shifter. On the GTO it is very far back, but any other shifter, say out of an Fbody, should bolt on just fine.

Also as said the GTO has no torque arm but the holes are still in the tail housing for it.

And yes it will bolt to the quicktime BOP/T56 bellhousing.

Here is a good picture that shows 3 different T56s
