1979 TA - Wipers won't shut off
« on: September 29, 2019, 06:16:12 PM »
I have a 79 TA SE - the wipers won't shut off.  Have delay wipers, delay does not seem to work with shutoff issue, but low/high speed seem to work.  I read should replace motor and pump assembly (with delay option) - are there any other options/fixes available.  I ordered the Fisher Body Manual and will review wiper testing section.  Thanks.

Usually when the switch goes bad, high speed and the washers work, but there is no low or pulse (the pulse setting works off the low speed). If you have low speed you should have pulse, it is therefore most probably the motor. You can get a new unit at your local parts store. There is no reproduction switch. If it is bad, you would have to source a 40 year old part and hope for the best.  That is what I am going to have to do at some point.

I have the same problem with mine. Is there seriously no way to fix the switch? A replacement original is like a good chunk of change and that's also on the basis that after a few years the same problem may arise. I gave it to my auto electrican to see what he could do, what is it that goes bad? The contacts? The lever? The wiring?

It can be wear in the contacts. If it hesitates after being turned off before going again, it can be the park mechanism playing up and not triggering the cam to drop the wipers.
