Title: Door window felts install
Post by: 1FSTLS1 on September 12, 2007, 08:51:59 AM
Any one have advice for installng the new trim that goes on the top of the door and keeps the window sealed.  Two peices one on the door panel and one on the door.  The one on the door is going to be hard.  I got two screws on the outside off but the glass is blocking the other two.  Does the whole window have to come out??

Any difference between the different kits?  I saw one on ebay for $69.00 and another on fbodywarehouse for $310.00 (NOS GM).  Seems like a big difference in price, is there that big a difference in quality, application, appearance or installation?

The NOS (New Old Stock) stuff is a GM part, if you are worried about that. If you are going for a concours restoration, the NOS parts are what you need. If not, go with the cheaper reproductions.  I put the reproductions on my '81 T/A and I am very happy with them.

The NOS felts have a round chrome bead and the reproductions have a flat chrome bead.  That is the main difference.  To me, it is not worth the extra $240.

I AGREE WITH HITMAN I JUST INSTALLED THE FLAT BEAD FELTS ON MY CAR THIS WEEKEND AND THEY LOOK ABSOLUTLEY RIDICULOUS. THE BEAD STICKS OFF THE SIDE OF THE DOOR ABOUT A 1/4 AND LOOKS STUPID.

I also found a set on ebay. But im a little confused, under the description for the felts with the chrome bead, it says that its for the non deluxe packages. My trans am has the deluxe package and has the chrome bead around the top and bottom of the window.

it can get confusing reading all that....there is:
deluxe window has the chrome bead attached to the window felts...
standard felts dont have the chrome attached to the felts, but could have a chrome molding attached to the door itself.....if its about a 1/2 inch strip of chrome on the top of the door then you will order standards..
if its about an 1/8th inch bead of chrome on the top of the door, but connected to the windowfelts then youll order the deluxe window felts...

from your description it sounds like you need the standard window felts...

So mine are standard even though i have the deluxe package interior?

You are getting confused.  There is a deluxe package for the interior, then there is a deluxe chrome package for the exterior.  Basically it is a set of chrome edges or molding that lines the door, the top of the fender, and the hood.  See the photo below that has trhe deluxe chrome molding.  The molding attaches to the top edge of the hood, the top of the fender, and the door itself.

If you have those five pieces of molding installed on your car, then you need the window felts WITHOUT the chrome bead because the chrome molding is already installed on the car.

Now, if you do not have the Deluxe chrome trim for the exterior like this photo:

Then you need the window felts WITH the chrome bead because it is not installed on the car.  You can see in the photos how the chrome edge on the door in the top photo runs all the way to the front edge of the door, yet the chrome bead in the bottom photo stops just past the rear view mirror.

So, there are dirrerent packages for Deluxe trim.  One is interior and one is exterior and they are not related to each other.  So, what you have on the inside does not relate to what you have on the outside.  I hope I explained this ok.

I ordered mine from summit racing for about 80$  They are alot better than the dry rotted ones I had but dont fit perfect.  The driver door would get water inside the window as the outer felt/rubber does not meet the window perfectly in the middle.  However they will do just fine for $80 vs $300.  I have an extra set if any one is iterested the one was bent in shipping and could be bent back and used.  PM me if any one is intersted.

I just installed GM part numbers 09612538 and 09612539 window felts and they are not fitting right.  I included both the drivers side and passenger side photos.  It's as if the curve is just too high.  I can't make them sit down tight at the end of it.  From the mirror towards the back, everything looks fine, but right at the end it pops up and does not make contact with the door.  What am I missing?

The newer GM parts are not exactly like the originals.  I think it was olds403 over on TAC that noted that the power window wouldn't even close properly because of the extra drag on the window.  His fix was to find a set of NOS pieces and it cured the problem.  As for the fit, mine didn't fit perfect, but they did fit better than what I'm seeing in your pictures.
