Yes. It will flow better. Might fail emissions unless you have historic tags and dont need a test.

Isn't illegal to take it off and run the car on the street?

Thats something you will have to ask your local BMV.  Emissions regulations vary from state to state, and in Ohio even county to county.  Like the other person said most states exempt people who have Historical tags from emmissions tests, Many states exept cars that are older than a certain year.  Just call your local BMV and ask them if you have to have an emmissions test on your car to register it.  In many states such as California it is illegal to tamper with the emmissions systems and you will be hard pressed to find a mechanic who is willing to take it off and run a straight pipe.  Other states don't care.  I guess it would be interresting maybe to dedicate a topic to Smog laws in each state so I will pose a new question in the General Topics  forum.

I've run into a few shops here in Ohio that won't mess with removing the convertor, unless they are replacing it.

Where would one purchase an eliminator pipe? Do auto parts store carry them?

Your dad is sure a handy man and good with metal too. I wish I had a shop and someone like your dad to help me. You should be proud of him.

Well yes it will a LITTLE bit. Anytime theres less restriction in your exaust flow, a motor breaths better.

Ahhh the good ol' days before emissions was a big deal.  I remember auto parts stores and speed shops use to sell the "filler pipe" to take the place of the cat converter........They called it a "TEST TUBE".

Life was good back then.

You can still buy them all over the place. All you need is a piece of pipe, all auto parts stores sell them. It might not be a good idea to tell them why you want the pipe if you live in a strict emission state. Usually 18inch pieces are sold right on the sales floor.
