Title: 1979 Trans Am Rear or Package Deck
Post by: 1979 Trans Am Y84 4sp on May 28, 2018, 02:05:39 PM
I wanted some opinions on the rear deck or package deck...I purchased and installed the neat and clean "mesh" version and the finish looks too fake in my opinion.....I see an ebay seller shows a less expensive one without speaker cutouts but it looks like in the photos to have the textured or grain look on press board/cardboard (although it still is actually a hard board of some sort) and this finish looks closer to what was originally there....do you know from experience what the rear deck material was made of and is there a high quality replacement one around?

The "flat"/non-mesh style would be correct for your car.

I believe the mesh style is only correct for the '79 TATA (10th anniversary model T/A).

As Jeff said, regular was just a stiff card board with somewhat of a textured grain effect, with or without speakers depending on year/options. They also had a vinyl strip attached to the front edge that tucked behind the rear seats. The colours available may not always be close to what you want, even if same name.
