RUST FIX (HOW TO) door skin inside edge.
« on: December 09, 2010, 10:49:01 AM »
(WARNING)
SOME PICS MAY BE DISTURBING TO THE PURIST, as some parts are destroyed to make a good piece.

I was asked how to fix the rusted lip of the skin on the inside. so I'll do a short how to here.
first the rust pics.  then I'll get it striped and the rust off it and will have more pics of the fix

wire wheel/grind out all the rust, then wash/blow it out , epoxy it.

(LOOK AWAY AT THIS POINT)

you need a junk lid with a good donor piece

more later

Mine has no where near that much rust....only whatever substance they used to adhere the skin to the lid is rusted and lifting.....It looks like some sort of soldering.  I'll post a picture if it's OK with you fourspeed.

So, I should be able to grind off the rust and use some epoxy to fix the cancered spots...right?

yes wire wheel all the seam sealer off , clean it good , epoxy , and re- seam seal it.

I'm going to spare you the details of the other lid.

add some glass filler , and some elbow grease and you'll be ready to seam seal it. and done

thanks Mike,  I'll try to remember to post a pic of it before paint.  I just got it back from a chemical and primer dip.  It took all the rust out of it.  I hope...  but it should be good for another 30years.

shipping cost is more then there worth.  + no 2 are the same. you would think they are , but there not.  they all warp to fit the car they came on.
the one that fit ,I still needed to put a 2x4 on one side of the jam and shut the lid to bend it the other way.

looks good and its that hard work that will get over looked when your finished too. good thing you take lots of pictures so everyone can see and really appreciate the effort you have put into the car.
