Hurst Shifter, two gears ONLY???
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:34:07 PM »
Ok, so this has that doofy hurst shifter in it which I cannot stand and it soon will be put back to the orginal shifter.  I can't find reverse half the times, and that intimidates me from driving it.  :'(
Apparently you have to pull up on the handle, pull it all the way down, get it into drive and then move up one or two to get it into reverse................GOSH I hate it!!
Anyway, Question here:
When driving, it feels like it is stuck in 2nd gear.  Mind you, I forgot how many gears are in here.  3 or 4????  Na, not 4, that's overdrive right?
Anyway, since you can't tell which gear your in, is it possible it is in low 1 or 2??  Feels like it should shift one more time.  I have not tracked the RPM's yet.  I will though.  Could this be a sign of tranmission problems?????? OMG I hope not!!!
Many thanks peeps!!  You guys are fun to chat with!!
 ;)

Count the the number of shifts - there should be two.  One between 1st & 2nd, one between 2nd and 3rd.  I'm assuming you're running the standard three speed automatic transmission.

Are you blond by any chance?   ;)

So ... you're having trouble shifting an automatic.  Have you used the clutch?

Husband confirmed that it is stuck in 2nd gear.  LOL John, ok, I might be blonde and I know there is no clutch for an automatic.
So, now what?  Bring it to the shop.................................AGAIN!!!

OK - I'll stop ... and I'm sorry.

Things I'd do;
Check the fluid level in park, running and at operating temperature.  Add slowly while running if low.
Check the vacuum line to the intake manifold.  It should be mainly metal ... if it's not, get a metal line with rubber at either ends.
Drop the transmission pan.  Put on a new filter & pan gasket.  Has the pan ever been dropped?  Look for bad things like metal in the pan.

Let us know ...
