Wire identification ?S
« on: April 28, 2008, 04:22:49 PM »
Can any one identify all 8 or 9 wires that come out of the harnes that is labeled B in this picture.  I know they are for the motor but can any one tell me what all of them are.  If you are looking from the front of the car it would be the left harness or passenger side.  Thanks in advance.

What are you looking for? A breakdown of which wire does what? If so you'd be best off getting a wiring diagram as it'll definitely help you out further down the road. I can get you a few answers though (this is based off my 78 which may be a little different).....

Purple wire (may have a ring terminal on it) is your starter solenoid wire.
Green wire (white clip) is your temp sending wire.
Blue wire (has plastic clip - either white or black) is your oil pressure sending wire.
Pink heavy gauge wire (white clip I believe) goes to the + feed on the distributor
White/Brown heavy gauge wire (brown clip) goes to the "tach" connector on the distributor.
Red wire with ring terminal goes to Alternator.

After that you have a forward light harness which includes your high/low beams, parking lights, and horns. And off the engine harness is your wiper motor & washer pump wiring.

Got a pic? Short of that...what color wire are you looking for info on? Will also need to know the engine in the car as the Chilton's manual I have lists different wiring between the 301 and the 305.

I believe it came with 301.  It has no motor now but (1976) Olds 455 will be going in.

Then you're actually all squared away as the 455 won't be computer controlled. Just cap the wires off so they don't short under the hood.

Green wire for temp sending  I have two green wires one is lighter one is darker ? White clip is gone

No blue wire

Here is what I know I have
Larger gage wires
Red
Orange (or light brown)
Brown
Pink

Smaller gage wires:
Light Green
Dark Green
Brown
Orange (or light brown)
Yellow

The clips and plugs at the end are mostly butchered but the larger gage orange or light brown has a white clip on it like for oil sending or something.

Also I have harness D in the pict below and I assume I will not need any of these???  The chevy 350 motor I pulled out was not using them.  What are all of these for?? Some go to a ralay up near the nose on the passenger fender?

D is your blower motor (HVAC) controls. If you are going to keep your fan you definitely need those wires.

As for which green to use...time to break out your multimeter (voltmeter) and probe to find out which connects back to the gauge pod. You can do this by setting your meter to measure resistance and if it reads 1 - when connected to the first green wire and the correct pin out on your gauge cluster - it's not the one you're looking for. When the resistance reads 0 you know you have the right wire for your temp sending unit.

Considering the wiring harness is that hacked up you might just want to consider a reproduction wiring harness from M&H and modify that to suit your needs. Mine cost $160 +/- and it was worth every penny as I didn't have to worry about a very smokey finish to my car once I supplied 12v to the circuits. Something to consider.

I believe E would be for the blower motor or HVAC controlls.  I also am thinking but and not positive that I should be able to remove all of D and thoes wires go to the computer inside.  I should not need them for my Olds 455 block.  Basicly I only need/want wires for Tach, oil pressure, coolant temp, volts/amps and thoes should all come from harness B.  Can any one clarify.

There's actually (2) different harnesses in B - (1) is your engine harness which has all of the wires I've already posted about and the other (1) is your forward light harness which includes your headlights, side markers, horns, (I think your wipers), and turn signals. They join together to make the block connected at B.

You really should get a wiring diagram for your car as it'll help you out with these sorts of questions. While you're at it you might want to read through all the information about the wiring harnesses over at www.firebirdtransamparts.com. There's a lot of good material there as that's how I sorted out the wiring in my car. Dedicate some time to going through there - lots of good info.

So I got my harness all fixed up and I have a green wire on EW and it says not used???  Why would there be a wire if it was not used.  HMM?
