Title: 1979 Trans AM Tach issue
Post by: Toolmaker1965 on October 21, 2017, 10:26:48 PM
Hi I recently bought a 79 trans am 403 with 71000 miles on it. I'm fixing the little things and one thing is the tach. At idle its sets at 4000rpm and goes to max 6000 when I'm driving. I have a wiring diagram and I've checked and all the wiring is correct. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

It could be actually operating fine between 0 and 2000rpm but needle has been bumped or the fragile assembly inside touched. There's not a lot you can do without risking making it worse. They do sell new tachos by OER  although when last checked a few years ago 79 wasn't one of them. Perhaps now.

I just checked them out and your right 79 is not the year tach that they carry.  :( Thanks anyway.

That's ok, it's been a few years, thought they may have by now.
