I would prefer the 70-73 (and do). But by the time I was old enough to afford a new TA it was 1978. So thats what I bought. So 78 is my second favorite but would probably be my favorite if they had left the 70-75 style rear window alone throughout the 2nd gen run. I think that window just looks better on these cars.

I do like all the years but I do have a few favorites.  Some are the 69 and 76. Mostly due to single production year styling that differ from other years.  The 69 body lines are great and the 76 with that molded front nose is awesome.  However the 79 10th Anniversary T/A, the 20th Anniversary T/A, and the T/A Ram Air's of 2002 I also find appealing.  But my vote went to the 76.  The last year with round headlights and molded front nose just gets to me.  Most importantly is that the 76 reminds me of my youth as I had one as a teen.  I am glad to be back in the drivers seat again of another 76.

I do hope that Pontiac gives us more years to vote on than what we have to date.  I am all for a fifth gen's if GM makes it happen.  It may be my new favorite.

I voted in my previous post but in returning to this topic, I have to say that I'm surprised that the 77-78's are leading in the voting by that kind of margin (and I have a 78]. The 77-78's are great looking but I would have thought (before the voting started) that the 70-73 would lead in such a contest or at the very least be very close to a tie with the 77-78.

ADDED: After thinking about it though, the 77-78's could be leading perhap because more folks who visit this site are 78 owners. It is after all 78TA.com so it's probably likely that there are more people here who own that year car. Part of the proof of that is in the pudding. Of the people who have responded to this topic AND who have cars listed in their signature lines, each of those people have a 78 something-or-other listed as being currently owned. Can't tell for sure about those who don't have cars in their signature lines.

I believe the same kind of voting occurred over at TAC awhile back (probably more than once). I don't recall the outcome but I would bet that the 77-78's didn't lead by that wide of a margin if at all. If I find that old post I'll report on the numbers here.

More: Well there were a number of similar topics that I found over at TAC.

- What late 70's body style do you prefer and why? (no POLL attached)

- What was your dream f-body and what do you own? (no POLL attached)

- What year 2nd gen do you own? (with POLL)

In looking at those old posts I was reminded of something important - there were alot more 77-81's built than the years previous so there will be alot more owners who are influenced in the voting according to what they actually own vs which style they actually like best.

The outcome of the POLL attached to the above question - What year 2nd gen do you own?, was as follows:

70-73 12%
74-76 6%
77-78 38%
79-81 39%
none 2%

So there are alot more of those later years. Probably more than enough to skew any voting outcome in favor of the later cars.

The other two questions above did not have POLLS attached so you'd have to pick through them to pull out the preferences.

Man this is an old post. Anyway, Zulu, I have to agree with you and thought of that when I started seeing the numbers come up.

I like the 73 best, and I own a 74.  I like the sailpanels of a pre 75 car and I like the fighter jet nose of the 73.  Smokey and the bandit created a lot of lovers of the Trans Am, and all of those people are going to be hardcore lovers of the 77/78 cars.  Nobody can deny the 77/78 is the icon of the second gen cars.  I had owned my 74 Trans Am for three years when Smokey and the Bandit came out.

Despite the fact that I have a 75 TA, I have to go with the 70 TA also, except that I'd go for the white with the blue stripe -- the car that I saw in 1970 that started it all!

I like them all, but if I really had to choose, I'd have to pick between the '70-'73 and '79-'81 cars. It would be a hard choice.
