The Idea
My name is Matt, Im 26 years old and I live in Tri-Cities, WA
I have had the urge to restore my parents’ old Trans Am, for many years, dating back to about 12 years old. I always liked the look of that car and remember riding in it when I was younger. It must be in a boys’ instinct to want to own or fix up something their parents owned. Possibly because of the memories that particular item has imprinted in the boys’ mind.
My memories of the car seem pleasant for the most part. I do recall getting pulled over many times by police while my mother was driving. I remember one time in particular my mother had gotten pulled over and told my brother Nick and I to start crying, in some sort of hope to have to officer sympathize with a mother with two crying boys in the car. While my brother and I were still young and by no means child actors, she slapped us both in her attempt to get us to cry. I don’t recall if that trick worked or not. If she got a speeding ticket that day or not escapes me.
Other memories of the car were standard as far as a child riding in a car goes. A two door American muscle car was hardly an appropriate vehicle for a mother with young children. It was a pain to have us load up in the back, car-seats and all.
Years pass, my parents had randomly stopped driving the car and it was parked. (I find out even more time later, that it was apparently because it had a slight exhaust leak and my mother was uncomfortable driving us around in it, in fear of the toxic fumes it could have subjected us to.) I watched the car grow old and fade over the years as I grew up. The car was later towed from in front of the house where cars were parked, out to the field behind our well house in which had nothing.
In about 2005, I was living at my mother’s house alone and I had an urge like I was going to actually start and do something with that car. The tires on the car were as flat as pancakes and the car was basically sunk into the ground. I borrowed a floor jack and got a piece of plywood to make a flat and stable surface, and I acquired new tires and I removed the wheels and replaced the tires. I also bought a new battery and attempted to start the car. It fired up after a few attempts and it brought joy and hope into my heart, just to hear the car start. I felt like there was still something I could do to rescue this Finley field doomed car.
Fast forward to about 2011, I was working with Gary and we had been tossing around the idea of me maybe borrowing some space in his shop to work on this car. At the time it was just a thought and he said sure. I was serious about it, to a point. I knew it was going to be a lot of hard work and I didn’t know much about cars outside of changing the oil. I also knew that I didn’t want to get too involved with it, because my mother still retained the title to the car in her name, and I knew better than to invest time/money into something that she legally owned.
Well another year went by and my mother procrastinated about ever getting to the title business. Gary and I mentioned the car again one day and it was almost like a light switch. He suddenly had this fire, this passion to do it. That of course got me excited because he was fully onboard with the idea. I then got my mother on the fast track to getting the title done, which by no means was fast. Then in May 2012 we had the title and we called up my uncle Mike and we got the car trailer and headed out to Finley. We got it loaded up and headed off to its next home for the next 1-2 years (hopefully).
The car seemed to be in relatively good shape. At the time I had no idea the extensive work we had in store. The interior was completely shot. No chance of salvaging much of anything. We started to disassemble the car. As we got deeper and deeper into it, all I saw was time and dollar signs. Gary always stays optimistic and hopeful, which helps me stay the same way.
Once we got the carpet up and the truck opened, I thought we were dead meat. The floor pans on the passenger side had extensive water/rust damage that had eaten through the floor. And there were 2-3 cases of beer that had been abandoned in the trunk for who knows how many years that had exploded and leaked to rot out the trunk pan in various places.
Still, Gary was very optimistic and acknowledging that while it would be a lot of hard work, it was all repairable. So we thrive on.

So, since I have browsed these boards for sometime without registering, i have noticed that people tend to help each other out with tips and advice.
My current dilemma is this:
I only have so much of a budget as time goes on. (Always the problem with any resto I know)
I am needing the car body/shell blasted to remove all the old paint and rust. I have done my homework and talked to several paint experts, including my own paint guy when we get to that point.
I have settled on having it sandblasted with 70grit sand, to remove said paint/rust. I have gotten various quotes around town and they all seem within the same range: Expensive - Bankrupt.
I know sandblasting is a skill, and Im sure it takes time to learn what you can and cant do with it. But an opportunity has presented itself, my uncle knows a guy who can do it on the side for a fraction of the cost as my quotes. However, he is just a general sandblaster, whereas my quotes come from shops who only restore cars and thats all they do. This other guy, just knows how to sandblast things.
Is it worth the risk of saving nearly $800-1000 by having this guy do it on the side? Or should I fork over the dough to have it done correctly/professionally? Im really having a hard time with this decision. I could use that money and make it go so much further into the projuct, but on the other hand, I dont want to ruin my car.

Nice T/A and good luck with it. 74-75 has the best front end imo. Hope it goes back to it's original blue. Cool that its from your family too

Thanks guys. Yeah it is awesome that it has been in the family. Those first pics of it in the field are behind the well house of my childhood home. Not sure on the color yet, I did like the dark blue. I know for sure we are re-doing the interior different colors. Probably black with maybe tan or gray seats.

Welcome to the forum. Nice to see another one go from sitting to being saved. As far as sandblasting the car goes, go with someone who knows what they are doing with body panels and for $800 to a grand.... I'd pick up a Quality DA sander (between $75-$150) and a roll of 80 grit and get cutting... Took me about 15-20 hours to DA my convertible LeMans down and it had 4 layers of enamel paint on it. Looks like yours may have had one repaint..?.. Maybe? If just anybody blasts the body on that it'll end up not being savable no matter how solid it is. Blasting can create an excessive amount of heat if the nozzle is held in one place too long and the warpage begins. HTH, Mike...

Yeah, Iceman, I believe my mother told me that it was repainted once the same color, so the layers that I have sanded off in a few spots are hard to notice.

Nice project!
Sand blasting the car is a no-no. It'll warp that sheetmetal quicker than you can say "Oh $..t". What you want is media blasting. Either glass bead or soda. The latter is more environmentally friendly, takes longer to do, and requires special prep for the paint to adhere properly as it will leave a film on the car. Trust me, I've been there already with soda blasting when the first shop I was dealing with decided to "try" this and didn't follow through on the prep work before primer. I had paint peeling off my hood in sheets! Not a fun experience.
I believe 4Speed uses a single edged razor to strip the paint off completely. My plan is a DA with 80-220 grit paper on the 80 Firebird. I have the toys, new in box, and have yet to try them out. Hopefully next year once a garage with a house attached is procured ;D

The inside of the trunk is bad. Really bad. The sand blast guy said that if he blasted on it anymore, it would just eat away the metal. Trunk pan should be fully replaced. We shall see what we can do.

The rear passenger got cleaned up a little bit from blasting, we now have a little clearer idea of the work we need to do.....a lot!

So thats it for the updates today. Been a slow last 4 weeks. The car was in the shop being blasted and I went on a week-long Alaskan cruise with the family, so not much work got done on the car in the last month. Hopefully after today I can get the ball rolling again. One more coat of paint, then we can start reassembling the front end and the sub-frame and get the motor and tranny all set up.

Nice work on the subframe and the other parts. Too bad about the trunk, but I think they make the trunk pans new. And if not im sure someone on here would have one.

Its going well. We got the toe-board floor pan area welded in and puttied around. Re-shaping that big hole in the back seat area is challenging. The guy from whom we were borrowing the welder needed it back, so we are looking to borrow another or break down and buy our own. Got all the pieces back from sand blasting. Had the rear end blasted (removed the rust) and I painted that with the epoxy style paint, same as our sub-frame. We have been ordering most of our parts through a friend at the Napa distribution center, so we have been getting everything for about 50% off retail, which is nice. Only thing left is the rear leaf springs and we should have everything to get the car back in rolling stock condition. So aside from painting a few various pieces, we are about to reassemble the front end, then we need to get that floor pan and side in the rear seat done. The trunk has been tough mentally. We have been giving it a lot of thought and I really didnt want to have to replace the entire trunk pan. So we might patch the little holes in it and then someone else suggested to us to maybe have it Rhino-Lined all on the inside, which would toughen the whole thing up. Then we can carpet it and no one would be the wiser. Its just a trunk, and Im not necessarily going for show quality. I mean a new trunk pan is like $200 and then another $200 just to have it freight shipped here, so I might cut that corner. I have a family friend who is an upholsterer, so he will be sewing together my new seats (probably next summer). But we have plenty left to do this winter while we have less daylight and its cold out. My boss/buddy who is helping me with this project has hunting season coming up, so that will slow us down for a few weeks. Other than that, everything seems to be coming along rather nicely. The sad truth is that this project financially will take me probably 2+ years to complete. Not looking forward to the bill when we need to order a completely new dash and center console and door panels. Plus sound deadener, carpet kit, leather for seats. Oh and Im also going to buy the conversion kit to put A/C in the car. All that adds $$ to the project and thats what will slow me down. But Im optimistic and love working on it, so it will be really rewarding. Thanks for asking! I will provide more picture updates as I take them.

Nice project!! Why don't you try and repair your dash, console, and door panels to save some money. I have seen far worse repaired and look nice. There is a thread either here or on Trans Am Country, or either PY which shows how others have done it. What do you have to loose? The materials are inexpensive and I'm sure you have the skill to do it.

Thanks everyone for all the interest and encouragement! I never thought of repairing the dash. I just figured since its been baking in the sun in the field for almost 20 years that it was too far gone. I mean there is a crack in it and the harder plastic shell around it is very brittle.
Sorry I havent posted any progress updates or pictures. As the winter came and then the holidays, Ive had less and less time to work on it. The shop that the car is in, isnt heated or insulated, so its damn cold to work on when its 20 degrees or less outside. That being said, Ive sort of been taking this off time to order parts and read up on whats in store. Also we messed up when we ordered the main bearings. We forgot to take in account, that the engine had a complete overhaul not long before it was parked 20 years ago. So the bearings we got were the wrong size. I have also been talking with a local GM wrecking yard owner who has tons of parts. I need new leaf springs for it as well.
So once it warms up again, I will start to really make some great progress. 2013 will be a great year for this project. Again, thank you all for your interest and support. It is so great to have a helpful community here!

So just an update, I was already talking to some of you earlier with my seat question. I wanted to say that I should have some more work done in the coming weeks as the temperature warms up a little more. I have done a few things here and there on the warmer days, but nothing that I have taken pics of yet. We got a little more welding done, and put a few of the front end parts together, various bushings inserted and ready to go. I will post more pics in the coming weeks. I did want to post what I am thinking about as far as color scheme for the car. I wanted some feedback. The exterior color I have in mind was never offered as an original option, so I guess I will never get credit for original/correctness.

Obviously the car above is not a TA, but we saw it at a car show last summer and that color just popped. It spoke to me. I have this REALLY wild idea, that a lot of you might frown on, but we know a paint guy who can paint in "ghost" objects, most people get flames, but I was thinking maybe instead of a decal, have him ghost in the Firebird on the hood, so it comes through the paint. Thoughts?

I helped my teenager re-do one for him and now I am hooked :)
He picked the same color scheme, must be the younger guys have good tastes, some of the 70s stuff can be pretty gaudy :P

I think the paint and the ghosted bird are awesome ideas. Who cares about original.

If you have a painter that can pull it off do it I no candy paint and ghosting anything is a hard skill to master but it would be very cool if done right.

Haha. Yeah, some of the 70's color schemes, they were cool back in their day. I think some of the colors still look good, but others not so much. Going into this project, I was going to do the white with the blue/black bird on the hood and all black interior. But as the project moved on, I saw other TAs on this site and I've been to a few car shows since I started. Like I said, I saw that car color that I posted and fell in love with the color. I know I'm far from painting my far, but its a dream. Obviously funding the project is a constant issue. A common problem in all resto projects. I really didnt have $20,000 laying around or saved up to do a quick start/finish. I knew going in, this would take probably a couple years. Anyways, I love the feedback, glad you guys like the colors I have in mind. I will get there someday.

Ok guys, we have most of the floor pan replaced and re-done. The next big hurdle is the Trunk. Our trunk is bad. It had 2-3 cases of beer in there add 20 years of sitting with hot and cold weather through the years, needless to say the beer exploded and sat in there and destroyed the metal. Not to mention the possible seal leaks of the regular weather. The shop I am working out of and the buddy I have helping me is amateur in comparison to what I've seen you all post. We do not have a rotisserie, so the car body is somewhat of a challenge to move upside down or various angles. I really DO NOT want and probably will not cut out the rear quarter panels, just because our welding skills would never get those back to perfect. We have been weighing the options of what to do. Do we cut out the part portions of the trunk pan (which there are a lot of bad spots) or order a new trunk pan and replace the whole thing? If we went for the new, can you even replace the whole trunk pan without cutting out the rear quarters? It doesn't even seem like the whole pan would fit through the trunk lid hole.
If we decide to patch and repair, we were thinking of cutting out various parts and shaping and welding in new sheet metal, and or using a lot of putty and bondo or whatever. Then spraying with epoxy paint and calling it good. I don't really plan to take this to any shows, so Im not worried if it looks correct, because once we upholster the trunk, you'd never see our amateur job. I just want to know some feedback as to some options and or tricks of the trade and solutions.

looks cool. I just replaced my whole floor and realized someday I'm gonna have to tear it all apart and redo the quarters and inner wheel wells. Possibly the trunk too as you do. I'm interested how you do a trunk pan as well.

Currently dyeing the other door panel and other plastic pieces. Tomorrow, we are going to get the rear end put back in and slide the sub-frame back under and bolt everything on and get it trailer ready for travel to take it up 2 hours away to have a custom paint job done.

I do have one question/concern about these headliner trim pieces. These had a plastic insert that was slid into place behind these metal trim pieces and they were already cracked and broken and when I tried to pull the rest of it out, it fell to pieces. Do I need these? If so, what do they do/provide? How can I get replacements? I have looked online and so far, no luck. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

Guys, I haven't updated in a while. I have been busy. I re-upholstered the seats, painted various interior plastics, repaired the plastic seat backs, had the dash bezel sent off and got it back restored, and most importantly, the car has been painted (but not yet cut and buffed, so its almost done)

Thank you! It has been a lot of hard work, but an incredible journey thus far. Yeah, we had to make due with a lot of crude ways of doing things. The Ghost bird was an idea and goal early on, and Im so glad that we got to do it. I cannot wait to share the finished car with all of the TA community here!

Your car turned out great! that color combo is BA. Only suggestion I would make is to possibly lower the front 1-2 inches. Congrats

I bought a new(er) speedometer on ebay and when we got it, I took it apart and flipped all the numbers back to 0. mainly because I documented how many true road miles the car has on it, but it didnt seem fair to not reset it, beings how we did a full inside and out rebuild on the motor.

Theres no other markings or decals on the car (yet) I think Im just going to order the gold/black decals, the "400" one for the shaker and the "Trans AM" for the rear spoiler.
