that is it,you can tell that there was someone at ford, coping a trans am right there.

We've had this topic before.  Is that why the 1968 Shelby had a black/gold paint scheme and a shaker?

Ah -- the Mustang II.  A horrid little car if there ever was one.  Now that I say that somebody will probably pipe up and say one of those was their first car and they think it was great, but lemme tell you in 1974 they were considered just ugly and slow.

You knew I would Rick.  The 1976 Cobra II. Black with gold stripes and a 302.  Judging from what Detroit was cranking out hp-wise in 1975, like the '75 Corvette 454 with approximately 190 hp, the 350 L48 with 180 hp, no Z28's and a choked T/A,  I'd put its 150 hp for a small car right up there.  Matter of fact, the guy that bought it from us still has it and drives in during the summer.  Then again, I've always liked loud graphics and spoilers on cars whether the car does 60 or 160. ;D

And as much as I try, I can't forget about the Gremlin, either. :P

Oh yes, that's the station wagon that AMC started building, then gave up after they got the back of the front door... ::)

Well, OK -- but you have to admit that the 76 was spotted 2 model years from the 74.  My sister-in-law had a 74 and it was a garage queen with paint that fell off (that year the Ford silver wasn't worth much).  Her husband is still POd at me for suggesting they just dump it when the transmission went -- his idea was to replace it and "save" money, but the engine started knocking as soon as it got back on the road and his wife was pretty mad that he didn't take my advice and trade it before they sank their savings into it.  This is 32 years later and I'm still not on his list of "favorite people". :D

Rick-

Everyone knows I love the Firebirds but I give the credit where it's due, and Mustang is a success story, no matter who has built it continuously since mid-year 1964.  I remember the Mustang MPG.  I still remember the MPG commercial from '75.  How sad is that?  :-[  I found a rust-free running 4-banger 4-speed MPG and I almost bought it a couple of months ago, just because you don't see them anymore.   But I bought a 79 T/A from him instead ;D
The Mustang morphed through the oil embargo early 70's, much as cars are doing right now.  It left performance to become more gas-friendly, then began to resurrect itself in 1980.  AMC never really changed with times and they paid the price.  They either had great innovative cars or laughingstocks, and somewhere after the AMX the innovation disappeared ??? along with AMC.

Oh yeah, I know about the Stang Girls... don't wanna get in trouble AGAIN... ::)

Actually, the old AMC did a pretty good job of building a car for the masses with the Rambler.  A friend of mine's dad collected them like you collect TAs.  He had a couple of barns filled with them, and planned to drive nothing but a Rambler until the day he died.  Whenever he needed a part, he found one in the barns on a car and used it.  He probably had 30-35 of the things, all wagons.

The original AMC Rebel has been called the precursor of the muscle car, and it was introduced in 1957!

Yes I'm still a AMC fan , my first car was a 70 Javelin in high school. I still have a 70 Javelin SST and a 74 Javelin along with my 79 TA. After I totaled my Javein in 1976 , I bought my 78 TA. Here is a couple pics of my Big Bad Orange 70 and the white 74. The orange one is still a bad little car.

Nice- especially the SST.

Hammer- my cousin bought a 79 Jeep Golden Eagle new.  Traded it in the next year for a Eagle 4wd car.  The car got stuck in places where I would have to drive my huge 1968 Galaxy 500 into and hook a chain onto it to pull the Eagle out.  It was the coupe version.  It spent lots of time in the shop.  Our rural mail carrier bought the wagon like you have pictured and carried the mail in it for years.

I had a 1974 AMC Gremlin X with the V8.  It was an ugly car but very fast.

My mother had an 1981 AMC EAGLE 4X4.  The four wheel drive was awesome in the winter with small tires and a small wheel base.

Hammer

Ditto X2  My mother had the Eagle and loved it.  I got through the snow very well.
