Welcome to the forum

While I cannot tell you how many special edition W72 Trans Ams were produced at the Van Nuys CA plant, I can let you know this info which is from Pontiac Motor Division.  I also have this info listed on my W72 page which is on this site.

"Pontiac production records show 8,326 Trans Ams produced with the W72 Performance Package, 3,982 cars at the Norwood, OH assembly plant and 4,344 cars at the Van Nuys CA assembly plant."

"Pontiac production records also show 367 Formulas were produced in 1979 with the W72 Performance Package, 152 cars at Norwood, OH assembly plant and 215 cars at the Van Nuys, CA assembly plant".

To the very best of my knowledge these numbers are no where else to be found on the internet as I do not believe they have been made public up to this point.

I do know there is one other site with production numbers that is listing information from my W72 site on theirs.

Hope this helps.

I guess a good explination for the 1978 numbers, which only the 4-speed numbers can we confirm (for 1977-1978 all 4-speed Trans ams were W72's) is the UPC codes.  For 1978 model year, all UPC code Y82 were produced at Norwood OH plant (reason Hurst T-Tops only at Norwood OH plant) while UPC code Y84 was produced at Van Nuys CA.  The only remaining Pontiac productions records that exist today are listed by UPC code.

For 1979 all black and gold Trans Ams carried UPC code Y84 including those produced without T-Tops.

What is known there were 1,107 Y84 W72 Trans Ams produced during the 1979 model year.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. I am in the process of doing some interior work. Luckly the paint is excellent and the #'s match. It is very original besides the need to find a stock radio for it .
                                      Thanks again.
