Does anybody know what this is?
« on: June 26, 2006, 09:45:36 PM »
I found this in the trunk of my Trans Am, but I am not sure what it is or where it goes, or even if it goes to my car.
Maybe somebody will know what it is.
I am thinking it went outside the car with all the dirt on it, but I am not sure.
It has a number on it, 10000716 W.P.I.
Thanks.

It's a "hush" panel.  It screws into the A/C duct under the drivers side.  The slots are for the pedal bars.  It should have jute on the side towards the duct.  These usually get tossed....like yours, either in the trunk or in the garbage.  My '78 didn't have one so I picked one up on ebay for $10.  They're a royal pain when you have to get to the fuse box though.  But, some cars had them from the factory and I think it's worth the trouble.  It keeps under the dash looking nice and also serves as some sound proofing.  Without the jute backing you'd lose the sound proofing ablilty though.

There are two places towards the firewall that you can put a small bolt into and push the holes at the end of the hush panel through so you can fasten the side towards the firewall.

The guy on the TAC forum was wrong....it's not a carpet guard....but you knew that.
