I believe those are for the vin plate and they are of an odd size.  I could be wrong but that's what I'm thinking.

its not the size its the shape.  those are called "rosette" rivets & as mentioned are used only for vin tags.  from my understanding you can not buy them new, they are specific to gm vin tags & not available to the general public.

at least thats what i heard many years ago, & i have never seen them for sale anywhere.  that would explain the price.

I went and checked my vin tag and I guess you are right ... I just can't believe that this shape can't be found at all  :-\

Well if you have a lot of time and patience you could take a steel rivet and a small round file and make some. But I think that if I really needed them I'd just spend the 40.00. If your having to replace that part of your dash because of rust issues and needed to remove the vin and put it back after your repair they would be well worth the 40.00 to have it looking original.

dont mean to raise any issues nor am i judging your car.... but that vin area looks kinda funny.  there should be a rivet on each side as far as i recall.  on the right side it looks like its been tampered with.  its not a perect rectangle corner like the left side... almost looks like some putty was put in there & not sanded & shaped right.

previous owners can do some pretty shady things with cars these days.  it just doesnt look right to me.

I never paid so much attention to that area at all ... I know it doesn't look right but now you guys get me worried ... Can anyone post a similar photo of the same area please just to see how it suppose to look like.

and you can judge and raise any issues you like ... After all that's what we are all here for ... TA talks and discussions and of course exchanging experiences ... So any comments you guys make are more than welcome by me  :)

i can get pics of my 81 for you if you want but there should be 2 rivets, one on the right just like the left side.  like i said i didnt mean to open a can of worms with your car, just wanted to be sure my comments didnt read wrong.   ;)

some cars have repairs in that area due to rust or damage, so it could be perfectly legit.  they just didnt try to hard to put the other rivet in or sand the inside of the corners.

heres the best i could get with the car inside a shed, under a cover & on a rainy day.  the angle is upside down, using a led flashlight, through the windshield!   but you get the idea.  should be 2 equally spaced rivets & a perfect stamped rectangle opening.

im sure someone else can post a better pic.

It's probably there just someone puttied over it during a repair and didn't sand it right.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.  My guess is that the previous owner just bondo'd over the rusty corners of the dash since they sometimes rust.  You can see the end that's in question looks real wavy and it's perfectly squared off.  I bet if you get to sanding a bunch in that corner the other rivit will show up.

I agree, the rivet was probably filled over, or a patch was welded in that area to repair. As for the Rosette rivets and price, they are getting hard to find due to the issue of stolen cars with swapped Vins. I think that due to the liability, they are just not easily accesible. Last year I saw a guy who had a set and his sold for $35 for the pair. As said, for anyone that has to do a upper cowl replacement or repair, it may seem like a small price to pay to be correct looking.

Thank you so much mate ... I really appreciate the effort you made to take that photo.

Yours looks great but I can’t tell whether it is normal rivets or the Rosette ones!!!

and thanks for all your comments guys … The car was originally blue interior and as you can see it is sliver gray anniversary interior now so for sure the PO has done something in there … I just don’t know what it is  :(

I’ll investigate and see … hopefully the rivet is in there and most importantly hopefully there is no rust in there or the repair wasn’t done properly ???

but I changed my mind now and bought the rivets for $40 just in case  ;D

Anyway I can get some kind of a history report for my car from the DVA or something?!! bear in mind I’m located in the UK and the car was imported from the US back in 2007

Thanks mate ... but I didn't mean the PHS documents ... I already have these. What I meant is something like the ones you see in ebay listings where it says 'This listing includes a FREE full AutoCheck vehicle history report' if you click on that report you can see the full history of the car from A to Z ... of course thats a free one so I'm guessing you can get a detailed one if you pay for it!!!
