My Vin and Cowl numbers.
« on: March 07, 2007, 10:52:36 AM »
Ok I am trying to ID my Vin and cowl numbers on my TransAm so guy has been calling me every day trying to buy the car. I have looked off and of for over 10 years for a decent car before I bought this one. I dont plan on letting it go but he is offering so high dollars now and I was wondering if I had something special. Both Build sheets have been found but where in such bad shape they where unreadable. :-[
Vin  2W87K9L160256
Cowl 79      03A     2FS87L191517
       62N    69L     W
       A51 - - -  T-4010464

Here is what I came up with please correct me if I am wrong.
2    Pontiac
W  Trans-Am
87  sport coupe
K    403 4bbl
9    1979
L     CA where it was built
160256 Pro.Number

79   year
03A Not Sure here
2     Pontaic
F     BodyType
S    Series
87   BodyStyle?
L    CA
191517   Body Number

62N Camel Vinyl
69L Lower color Chesterfield brown
69U Upper color Chesterfield brown
W   Trans Am
A51  Bucket seats
T-4010464 Not sure about this. I figure it is a run number of some sorts.

I do not see anything special about this car. Or am I missing something? At least I am happy with it being a TransAm.

Nope, you are not missing anything, there is nothing special about the car.  The 03A means it was built the first week of March.

LOL, I dont think he ment it that way. I am kind of relieved to find that it, is what it is. Now I wont feel so bad building it like my Dream T/A I wanted back when I was 16.

When I was younger,I wanted 2 colors of TA's. I now have My Martineque Blue 78, and I am going to get ( sometime) a Chesterfield Brown 78 also. You got any pics?

ChesterField Brown. My 77 was the same brown also. I am temped to paint it the same color. I am thinking of a Bright Metallic Red maybe, that is if I don't go black. I also just put a pic in my sig of the car. I still have not done any thing other than drive it and look for things wrong with it. I am making a list of things that are bad so when I pull it apart and put it back together in the future I can fix what is bad.

Since this is a Van Nuys CA car the W on the data plate stands for water base paint

The 1978 paint code for Chesterfield Brown is 69, according to the Number Crunching article in the April 1995 issue of HPP.

He was actually asking for the paint mix code to take to a paint shop to mix the color:
Chesterfield Brown Color Code:
Fisher "WA" Number - 7027
Dupont "Lucite" Code - 45182
Ditzler "DDL" Code - 3092
