Cutting mine out made a lot of difference and makes it sound better too imo. I made mine functional.

Would driving on a rainy day with an open shaker be ok? I mean, im sure people did when they were open from factory.

A little water is bound to get in with an open shaker, since even if you have a screen, it's not going to keep water out. But it doesn't seem to cause a problem. I do have a 79 with an open shaker and have driven it in the rain, once in a hard downpour on the interstate, and had no problem. Believe or not, a little water in the fuel/air mix actually runs good. There is such a thing as water injection for example.

thanks. Very clear answer :-) would anyone who's done this say when to do this, before or after the shaker is painted?

I've had my shaker opened up since 1980, other than the occasional rain at a car show, don't drive it in the rain. I think these cars were meant to have an open shaker, I just wish I didn't cut up the orig, but thats the way it is. nice shaker there Aussie, the flange inside is meant for that. heres mine, just black screen. Ahhhh Woodward........

Yo Gammo
Havent you got a vid showing the shaker flap opening and closing?
Imho you get the best of both worlds with this mod..when parked at shows or when it really buckets down you have the flap closed for that uncut look, then when driving a flick of a switch and listen to that beautiful sucking noise 8)

IMO you cant beat the sound a cut shaker makes when you plant your foot!  8)

BUT if you have the original un cut shaker I would not cut it, you can pick up a cut shaker for around $50.00. Store the un cut one as these days they are becoming harder and harder to find.
I know thats what you did Gammo and I have found an un cut one that I will paint up and stash away for a rainy day.

I felt that it made a difference, too. I got bored waiting for my queue at the body shop, so I installed it one Saturday morning. I think my favorite thing was watching the look on my 8-year old son's face while he pressed the gas and watched it open. Oh, we were parked in the driveway, btw  8)

I drove mine in an absolute downpour with no issues, also.

The original shaker on my Y88 is uncut. I picked up a second one ,cheap, so i could do something like this. I may just go with the "screen" and that way i can swap the shakers when i want to. And @ Aussie.: Thanks for the video. Cool man.......
