window switch
« on: May 04, 2010, 10:56:00 PM »
I am curious if this is a correct replacement switch for my windows. Also by looking at it can anyone tell me how to wire this up? The ends of the wire have the factory tips on a few and another one doesnt have any and another has the wrong one. Is there a better way of attaching these? They do work. If I take the pink wire and touch the blue or brown the windows will go up and down as supposed to but very very slowly.

EDIT 2: I looked again and saw the bottom pic of that switch. That isn't the right switch for the TA. The top looks right but the connector is different. I'm sure you could make it work if you made your own connections though.

Second is you are missing the plastic housing for those connectors. Otherwise I'm sure you could make up some female connectors to connect to those studs.

There is a way to wire the windows up with relays that really help windows speed. I have a diagram here somewhere.

EDIT: Found the link

NOTE: Regardless you will still need a way to connect those wires to the switch.

The original switch probably burned up do to the poor GM design. Someone got that switch and found that the contacts weren't arranged the same as the old switch so they just broke the plastic housing that kept the wires where they should be and plugged them onto the switch as needed. As you've already discovered, you can probably make that switch work. With out a meter, you'll just have to figure out which contact goes to which via trial and error. The big red wire is the power wire. See if you can determine which post it goes on and then one by one attach the other wires and push the button and see if you get the correct result. If you'll look at the schematic we made that lilski posted, the brown wires are down direction and the blue wires are up direction. That should help some.....

Slow windows and burned up switches is the reason we came up with the cicuit lilski posted. You can convert your power windows to run off relays reducing the wear on the switch itself and provide more power to the window motor where it is needed. Another improvement in that drawing includes running a new ground wire for the window motors. The GM design uses the physical connection from the door to the door hinges, from one hinge to the other and then finally to the chassis. Tons of room for corrosion and an overall poor connection. You can run the ground wire alone and probably speed up the windows some. Just attach a 10 or 12 gauge wire to the mounting screw for each window motor and run the wire through the boot and screw it to the chassis inside the cabin somewhere.

Thanks everyone. Thats really helpful. I thought my regulators were dying out on me. The switch never worked for me. Maybe the power wasnt hooked up right. Anyone know where I can get the correct one. This one is plastic and I would like the orignal look and feel.

Not sure. Do I need a power window relay? I guess I do. What are you looking to get for it?

Is it the wire harness from the box to the switch? If it has the correct ends on the wires sure.

Oh as far as getting the right switch the usual places like ames and YO sell the switch (not sure if Hitman does or not). I think they get like $100 for the damn thing.

Yeah I considered buying one till I saw the price. Mine wasn't working so I just pulled it apart and cleaned the contacts inside. It is a very simple switch.

I can't imagine why that switch wouldn't work.  Your harness is screwed up because it's missing the connector, but like what was said above, cut the ends and install female connectors.  You'll need to figure out how they connect.  You also need the retainer that holds the switch to the console.  Do you have that?  Otherwise that switch will float in the console.

If you go to a salvage yard, pull the harness from the switch.  It's a short piece that goes from the switch to a connector behind the drivers kick panel.  Also, get the switch along with the retainer.  If they don't have the switch, at least look for a retainer.
