New radiator/ larger motor
« on: July 27, 2015, 01:12:34 PM »
Hi all, I've got a freshly done 1964 Pontiac 389 6.4L motor in a 1981 trans am and the coolant is leaking into tranny.  I believe looking at photos on here that it is still the original radiator to the old 301 turbo.  Looking for advice on a new one? Should I go stick to ensure fitment in car or is it not capable of the larger motor? Hoping to order soon.  Thanks in advance !

Champion Radiators makes 2, 3, and 4 row aluminum radiators based upon the hp of your motor or your own preference.  A lot of us run this brand.

Contact me if you want to do a dual elec fan setup and rad w/ shroud. I run it on my car w/o issues. (455 w/ 550 hp)  Fans pull 4400 cfm and only draw 18 amps via brushless motors. Its not the cheapest but it out performs the rest.  PM you remail, I can send you some pictures.

I would love to do the dual fan, but it might have to wait til next spring now.  It's been a busy week and I needed to run the car so I threw in a champion radiator.  I would like to go to dual electric fans and also a seperate trans cooler sounds like the best way to go... however I'm in need of tires now and it's going to eat up the rest of my budget.

It is working out great.  I like the look of the all aluminum also.  Haven't driven it in a while and when I do I don't go far so I haven't really tested it yet.  I've got a small oil drip coming off the filter I have to find the source of, so it's just collecting oil on the heat wrap that's on the header collector and smoking like crazy once I stop .  Hopefully this weekend I can take care of that.
