Best Headers for a '79 400 w/4spd?
« on: May 11, 2007, 08:59:10 PM »
I've read so many posts that I can't really keep them all straight.  Can someone let me know what are the best headers for a '79 Trans Am with a 400 and 4spd.  I'm not so worried about flow as I am about fitment.  Thanks.

I think Dougs are the ones everyone likes the best.

Where are you getting your "Dougs" headers?  I've searched their site (which is now Petronix) along with Summit and Jegs and can't find any listed for my application.  Does anyone happen to have a part number I can use?  Thanks.

I got mine from my local speed shop or you can get them from Performance Years.
The part number is:  D570 for D-port heads  or  D581 for round port.  They are pricey but well worth the money in my opinion.

Go to www.Performanceyears.com  to check them out.

dont use headers  all they do is leak and when you go over speed bumps they drag the ground use ramair IV or III exhaust manifolds instead

I've never had that problem.  Sounds to me like the wrong headers.  If you use quality gaskets they don't leak either.  I use copper on the head side and dead soft aluminum on the collectors.
