How Rare Are the Gold SE Birds?
« on: February 11, 2008, 01:00:20 PM »
I don't see many of T/As in gold. And 9K original miles. Is this car rare in gold? Either way, its a sharp car.

Well, we know there were 8,648 Y88s with either the L80 or W72 engines, but not how many were built with the L78 (those numbers were lost for that year somehow). Then of course you have the ones like mine that are not Y88s but still the Solar Gold color.

That car appears to be one of the "mystery" L78s. ;)

Something doesn't smell right.  If this car really only has 9,174 miles, why does it have an incorrect shaker decal?  It's my understanding that this model shouldn't have a shaker call out at all.  It does have the look of a low mileage car though.

Why would the passenger side door handle be missing the color coded tape?  How could the door handle have broken on this low mileage of a car?  Usually it's the drivers side first.  The nose appears to have been painted...but it's hard to tell from the pictures.

I hate it when the dealer puts those ugly stickers on a car.  I wouldn't buy the car if the dealer did that to me.

The ad says the car was repainted and decal'ed two months ago.  Factory paint won't even last 10,000 miles! ::)

Read? Whose got time to read?  Well, I can say that the paint from Van Nuys wasn't very good.  But, if the car was in the garage and out of the sun, it shouldn't need repainting.  I don't think color matching was the problem though (as he states).  Van Nuys, because of California emissions standards, used a water base paint.  That paint couldn't stand the test of time...but my car went over 20 years and 70K miles with the original Van Nuys paint and it looked good when my daughter wrecked the car.  Paint did dry off the car onto the towel after washing it and turned the towel the color of the car.

Another example of an indignity perpertrated upon the population by the CARB.  I can't figure out why you guys keep living out there.  There's gotta be SOME upside...but I'll admit...I haven't seen it yet. :-\ :-\

I was in a short sleeve shirt today out in the back yard.  It's the weather.  But this area isn't nearly as nice as it was in the 60's.  It's gotten crowded.

Yeah, I was watching the race in Pamona yesterday and they were in shirt sleeves at the starting line.

I was grumbling about the snow a lot. ::)

I was reading the auction a little. I did see it said the car was only drivin in nice weather, but not that it was kept out of the weather otherwise. That would definitely explain the need for paint. And the threads here about the shaker decals shows that not many people know that the '78 L78s didn't have them. I know I didn't realize it until pretty recently and I had one with original paint and decals. lol  So that I would say is an honest mistake.

I think its a pretty good looking car myself.  What I did find a little unusual was that it was a Van Nuys car and had a 400.  I thought all the Van Nuys cars had the 403.  Guess I learned something new.  The shaker decal is incorrect though.  Should be 6.6 litre not T/A 6.6 (have the same thing on my car).  Also never saw a radio blockout plate with a GM logo on it.

Those are just rub on letters and its a poor job at that on the radio blockoff plate. It looks like the car was sold in Illinois from the build sheet so it could have been built in CA with the 400.

But you brought up BOSA so i'm sure Brett's using every fiber of his being to resist posting on this car ;)

My 78 SE was built in Van Nuys with the 400, no decal on the shaker.
